Emmy Night Is Here. Here Is What We Already Know

The Creative Arts Emmys have spoken. Widow's Bay dominated, Bad Bunny made history, and the biggest categories are still to come tonight.

The Emmys Are Tonight. Here Is What Already Happened.

The Primetime Emmy ceremony airs tonight on NBC hosted by Mariska Hargitay, and the big categories — Comedy Series, Drama Series, and all the acting leads — are still undecided as of this writing. But the Creative Arts ceremonies already handed out awards on September 5th and 6th,¹ and there is already more than enough to react to.

The Moment That Mattered Most

Rob Reiner won Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for The Bear, posthumously, after he and his wife Michele Singer Reiner passed away in December 2025.² The crowd gave the win a standing ovation. There is not much more to say about that. It was the right call and the right reaction. He deserved it and the Television Academy handled it with the respect it warranted.

Widow's Bay Is Making It Very Hard to Ignore

Going into the Creative Arts weekend, Widow's Bay was the show I had never heard of despite 19 Emmy nominations. Coming out of it, Widow's Bay was the single biggest winner across both nights with eight total awards spanning casting, sound mixing, production design, cinematography, and music.³ Eight awards before the Primetime telecast even airs.

I wrote previously that I had not heard enough about this show and blamed Apple TV's marketing. I stand by that. A dark comedy horror series with a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes and now eight Creative Arts Emmys should not be flying under the radar. Do I gravitate toward comfort shows over dark comedy? Yes. Is Widow's Bay clearly something exceptional regardless of my personal preferences? Also yes. It is going to the top of the Apple TV list when I finally subscribe.

South Park Finally Won Again

South Park took Best Animated Program for the first time since 2013.⁴ That is a thirteen year gap. The show has been consistently good for most of that stretch, which tells you everything about how competitive and political Emmy voting can be. A well-deserved win for a show that has earned it many times over. And great timing as they recently annouced a name change to "South America" as a nod to Trump.

The Traitors Is Running Away With Reality TV

Six trophies total for The Traitors including a third consecutive host win for Alan Cumming, who did not even show up to collect it in person.⁵ That is a level of confidence that only comes from knowing the outcome in advance. The Traitors is simply one of the best competition reality shows on television right now and the Emmy record is starting to reflect that. If you have watched any reality or competition TV and have not watched The Traitors, it is almost impossible not to get hooked once you start.

Summer House Did Not Win and That Is Okay

Love on the Spectrum took Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program,⁶ ending Summer House's nomination run without a win. I am surprised but not devastated. If anything was going to beat Summer House this cycle it was always going to be Love on the Spectrum. It is exactly the kind of show that the Television Academy gravitates toward — wholesome, universally accessible, the kind of content that anyone regardless of age or demographic can sit down and watch together. Bravo skews younger and more female, which is not a criticism, but it is a reality that affects how voters see it. Summer House getting nominated in the first place was the win. The recognition matters even without the trophy.

Bad Bunny Made History and Is Now Halfway to an EGOT

The Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show Starring Bad Bunny swept all seven of its nominations, winning Outstanding Variety Special Live, music direction, choreography, sound mixing, lighting design, technical direction and camerawork, and directing. Seven out of seven nominations, making it the most awarded Super Bowl halftime show in Emmy history⁸, and putting Bad Bunny halfway to EGOT status. He already has his Grammys. The Oscar and Tony are what stand between him and one of the rarest achievements in entertainment. Given the trajectory he is on, it does not feel impossible.

Sabrina Carpenter also won her first Emmy as executive producer and performer on The Muppet Show reboot, defeating Taylor Swift's Eras Tour Final Show in the pre-recorded variety special category. Carpenter is also now halfway to an EGOT following her Grammy wins in 2025.⁹ Taylor Swift walked away with nothing from five nominations, which is its own kind of headline.

What Tonight Still Holds

The categories that actually define the Emmy conversation have not been decided yet. Best Comedy Series. Best Drama Series. Jean Smart potentially tying the record for most acting Emmy wins in history if she wins for Hacks.⁷ Widow's Bay trying to extend its Creative Arts momentum into the Primetime broadcast. The Bear competing as a comedy for the last time. All of it happens tonight.
