I have spent more hours than I can count watching TV, going to comedy shows, and reading about the entertainment industry. Not because I had to. Because there is nothing else I would rather be doing. My background and experiences have taught me to ask why, and entertainment has given me endless material to work with. Why does one episode evoke more emotion than an entire season of something else? Why does this particular show have an entire culture watching at the same time? Why does a great stand-up set feel like therapy even when it has nothing to do with your life? These are the questions I am always asking, and this is where I try to answer them. Comedy is where this started for me, but this site is really about paying attention. There is an enormous amount worth watching and experiencing that most people never get to, and I want to change that. Whether it is a comedian you have never heard of but absolutely should, a show the whole culture is watching for a reason, or a story that will genuinely make you think. I want to be the reason you do not miss it. This isn't a recap site. It's an informed, opinionated guide to everything worth paying attention to in entertainment. Television, stand-up, podcasts, memoirs, industry moves, and the cultural moments that connect us all. There is always more going on beneath the surface, and always a reason you should be paying attention. This is where we get into it. Questions or just want to talk entertainment? Megan Mullally is still best known for Karen Walker on Will & Grace, both the original run and the 2017 revival, as well as numerous other small roles that highlight her personality. And Adam Scott went from this show straight into Parks and Recreation, and eventually Severance, along with Big Little Lies and Step Brothers. --- ### Is Adam Scott Secretly Running Hollywood? Adam Scott has gotten consistent work. I don't know if that makes him the most down to earth guy in comedy of all time, or if it reveals a deeper conspiracy that would expose hidden connections within the industry. Turns out I'm not the only one who's noticed. One ScreenRant retrospective on his career actually describes him as "the everpresent Adam Scott" while cataloging his roles. I couldn't find an actual conspiracy, but there is a real, recurring professional relationship worth mentioning: Ben Stiller directed Scott in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty back in 2013, long before the two teamed up again on Severance. So if there's any hidden connection here, it's less a conspiracy and more just two guys who keep working together. --- ### Jane Lynch Reminds You Why She's So Good Jane Lynch was also a pleasure to watch in this show. I haven't seen her in much since Glee, so watching this reminded me of how much she brings to every scene she's in. This was elevated on Party Down because of the writing. Her comedy showed through better than it was ever able to on Glee. It was also a great surprise seeing Jennifer Coolidge show up as her temporary replacement. Speaking of Jane Lynch, she recently did an interview discussing a Glee reboot. After word circulated online from Ryan Murphy that a reboot script was ready, there's been real buzz building around the possibility. Murphy confirmed on September 24 that he's finished the script and has been talking to around 10 original cast members about it, though he's stressed nobody's actually read it yet. Lynch herself told Fox 5 New York she'd "be so happy" to do it, adding that a lot of kids are discovering the show for the first time and that its message about music bringing people together still resonates. --- ### Fred Savage: A Comedy Beast Fred Savage directed on Party Down, and it's just one entry in an impressively long resume. Before he was ever behind the camera, he was in front of it, best known for playing Kevin Arnold on The Wonder Years for six seasons, a role that earned him two Primetime Emmy nominations, plus his part in The Princess Bride. He's also the older brother of Ben Savage, of Boy Meets World fame. After graduating from Stanford with a degree in English in 1999, he pivoted fully into directing, starting with an episode of his brother's show before building a career on That's So Raven, Phil of the Future, and Drake & Josh. From there he moved into more adult comedy, producing and directing on both original seasons of Party Down, along with It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Modern Family, and 2 Broke Girls, racking up four Directors Guild nominations in the process. --- ### Nothing About This Show Was Improvised This is a tightly scripted series, and I wanted to double-check whether any of it was actually improvised on the fly, since so much of it feels loose and natural. Turns out it wasn't. Ryan Hansen, who played Kyle, has said the cast "just didn't have time for improv" given the show's budget and schedule, crediting creator John Enbom's writing for how natural it all comes across anyway. Critic Daniel Fienberg made a similar observation in his original review, noting the writing "simulates the illusion of off-the-cuff improv while being, by all accounts, tightly scripted." ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/10/MV5BYWYwNWIzOGEtODQ0ZS00ZDBiLTg5ZDYtMjRjY2Y4NGFhNmFjXkEyXkFqcGc@._V1_.jpg) Photo by IMDB --- **Sources** 1. It all started March 21, 2006, when The Real Housewives of Orange County premiered on Bravo with five women in the gated community of Coto de Caza, kicking off what would become a reality TV empire spanning more than a dozen cities.¹ To mark the anniversary, Bravo built this installment of Ultimate Girls Trip around that history, subtitled Roaring 20th.² --- ### What's Actually Happening This Season Roaring 20th premiered August 9 and runs nine episodes, with seven core Housewives making the trip: Teresa Giudice, Luann de Lesseps, Kyle Richards, Vicki Gunvalson, Gizelle Bryant, Porsha Williams, and Lisa Barlow, her first time appearing on the franchise.² The route retraces the map of Real Housewives history, stopping in Orange County, Beverly Hills, Atlanta, Miami, New York City, and the Berkshires, home to Dorinda Medley's Bluestone Manor, for the grand finale.³ Along the way, the season has pulled in guest appearances from 82 past and present Housewives across the franchise's full 20 years, including a long-awaited return from Atlanta original NeNe Leakes, arguably one of the most iconic personalities in franchise history, alongside Phaedra Parks in the Atlanta episode.⁴ Porsha's presence has been a highlight so far, and she's proven to be one of the most consistently entertaining parts of the cast this season. Luann, on the other hand, has pulled more focus than expected, and not always in a way that's benefited the show. A trailer for the back half of the season shows her literally telling the group "it's my town, move over" during the New York stop, and picking a fight with Porsha over being late.⁵ That's come at the expense of time with the other women, especially during the Beverly Hills, Orange County, and New Jersey stops, which could have used more screen time with past cast members from those cities. Miami's episode has been light on Miami Housewives specifically, too. Someone like Lisa Vanderpump was never going to make the cut given her history with the network, but the format has done real work elevating housewives from newer or lower profile franchises, giving them a bigger spotlight than they'd usually get. --- ### What Filming Meant to the Cast Beyond the drama, several cast members have opened up about what this specific season meant to them personally. NeNe Leakes told a producer she felt genuinely nervous before her Atlanta surprise, having been away from the franchise for about six years.⁶ Gizelle Bryant, reflecting on the franchise's 20-year run, called Potomac "my baby" while joking about wanting to leave that baby behind once RHUGT filming actually started.⁷ Lisa Barlow described feeling the love behind how the group handled a tense Atlanta moment. Vicki Gunvalson told PEOPLE that being around the other women is "therapeutic" for her.⁸ On a more emotional note, Kyle Richards got choked up discussing her daughter Portia's college essay about growing up in front of RHOBH cameras during the Episode 7 New York stop,⁹ and Teresa Giudice opened up about reconciling with Melissa Gorga, crediting conversations with her daughter Gia and her brother Joe for the shift.¹⁰ ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/09/Screenshot-2026-08-27-at-12.58.15-PM.webp) Photo by Deadline --- ### The Ratings Are Backing Up the Hype The premiere pulled in 2.5 million total viewers across platforms in its first week, a 112% jump over the previous season's premiere.¹¹ On Bravo's linear broadcast alone, the episode was up 97% year over year, and on Peacock it climbed 110% to hit a streaming series high for the entire Ultimate Girls Trip franchise.¹¹ Seven days after airing, it ranked as Bravo's sixth-biggest season premiere in Peacock's history, and the season has racked up 97 million social media impressions so far.¹¹ It's a bit surprising the numbers came in that strong for an anniversary special specifically, though the drama has clearly kept people engaged well past premiere week. The midseason trailer alone, teasing a blowup between Teresa Giudice and Heather Gay that Porsha ends up stepping in to break up in front of Andy Cohen, generated its own wave of coverage heading into the back half of the season.¹² --- ### What Andy Cohen and Bravo Have Said About the Milestone Frances Berwick, Chairman of Bravo and Peacock Unscripted, described the franchise as having amplified women's voices for two decades and called the season "a love letter to the women" who built it into a cultural phenomenon.¹³ Bravo's own official description of the season leans into that same framing, describing the trip as one meant to pay tribute to the franchise's past while looking toward however many more years are ahead.¹³ --- ### Standout Moments From the Season So Far A handful of moments have stood out for the right reasons. NeNe Leakes' surprise return at an Atlanta drag brunch in Episode 4 reportedly had the cast rushing the stage.⁶ Shereé Whitfield got her own reunion with Kim Zolciak and NeNe at the Episode 5 Alter Ego party, where Porsha gave a speech honoring the Atlanta originals who, in her words, opened the door for everyone who came after.⁴ Heather Dubrow paid homage to her own infamous RHOC cake meltdown during Vicki's bunco redo in the premiere,⁴ and Teresa and Melissa Gorga's on-camera reconciliation during the Miami stop in Episode 7 gave the season one of its more genuinely emotional beats.¹⁰ --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/09/fsadjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjj.jpg) Photo by XO Diva D ### What Other Outlets Are Saying Coverage has been largely glowing. Vulture's Brian Moylan reviewed the premiere and described the experience as something like riding in a malfunctioning time machine, jumping between eras of the franchise's history.¹⁴ He singled out NeNe Leakes' appearance as the standout moment of the episode. The Daily Beast's Kevin Fallon, writing on his Substack Obsessed, called the premiere a fan's fever dream and echoed that NeNe's return felt like a genuinely big deal for longtime viewers.¹⁵ The Hollywood Reporter took a different angle entirely, running an oral history style feature where the full cast reflected on surviving 20 years in the franchise together, which reads less like a review and more like a genuine retrospective.⁷ Rotten Tomatoes' critic coverage has been a little more mixed on pacing, noting the season leans on structured games to manufacture drama, though it still credits the show with plenty of payoff in its smaller, more chaotic moments.¹⁶ Us Weekly has also been tracking the season closely since casting was announced back in January, covering everything from cast confirmations to Kim Zolciak's on-camera return.¹⁷ If anything, I think the show could have leaned even harder into the nostalgia angle. There's been a fair amount of drama between the women this season, and much of it could have been avoided if everyone had focused more on celebrating the past Housewives coming through rather than getting into it with each other. --- **Sources** 1. This is also Del Toro's first-ever leading role in a comedy series. The show follows a disgraced financier accused of massive fraud who lands in protective custody and has to navigate prison politics while awaiting trial. Most outlets reporting on the project have Stiller playing that lead role, though Apple has not officially confirmed which of the two actually plays the financier.¹ I don't know much about Del Toro's comedic side, but I'm mainly excited to see another show greenlit at Apple given how stacked their lineup already is. They've already brought on a great cast: Amy Sedaris, Samson Kayo, Sonny Valicenti, and, most recently, Janeane Garofalo, a frequent Stiller collaborator going back to *The Ben Stiller Show*, *Reality Bites*, *Mystery Men*, and *The Cable Guy*.² Reporting on this one neutrally for now, but the cast alone is a reason to pay attention. The project itself actually started as a pitch from producer Ben Silverman and Propagate Content, described early on as "Hogan's Heroes meets The Office."³ Apple then paired that concept with Mike Judge, Steve Hely, and Dave King, the same trio behind Adult Swim's *Common Side Effects*, with Judge also directing, his first time in the director's chair since 2009's *Extract*.³ Stiller is currently one of Apple's most prolific collaborators. Beyond this, he executive produces and directs episodes of *Severance*, stars opposite Jessica Chastain in the upcoming *The Off Weeks*, and has *Stiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost*, his documentary about his own parents, already on the platform.⁴ --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/09/MV5BMWE5ZDJiZmItMDE4My00OTgzLWJiODUtNzczZTZkZDQxZGJmXkEyXkFqcGc@._V1_.jpg) Photo by IMDB ### Judd Apatow Lets Norm Macdonald Tell His Own Story *Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald*, directed by Judd Apatow, premieres on Netflix October 16\. It's built entirely from archival footage, personal photos, and home videos contributed by fans and friends, no talking-head interviews, no outside narrator, letting Macdonald essentially narrate his own life story.⁵ I'm a huge Norm Macdonald fan, and I first discovered him through my love of SNL. His time on Weekend Update made him one of the greatest to ever sit behind that desk, and it came with a notable firing to go along with it. Norm was pulled from the anchor chair in 1998 after refusing to let up on O.J. Simpson jokes throughout Simpson's murder trial. NBC West Coast president Don Ohlmeyer, a close friend of Simpson's, made the call, publicly citing declining ratings, though almost no one, including Norm himself, believed that was the real reason.⁶ The story of his life is sad, and I wish I had learned more about him while he was still alive. Given how much personality Norm had, and how much time he spent in front of a camera over his career, I think this archival-only approach is a unique choice that more documentaries about famous people with that kind of footage should try. That said, it's always interesting to hear other people's perspectives on a comedian and see whether it validates things I've already thought myself, so I'm curious how much this connects with a wider audience, either incredibly well, or not at all. The documentary hasn't premiered yet, so formal reviews aren't out, but early reaction to the trailer has leaned toward exactly that idea, with viewers online noting that no impression or reenactment could ever capture his deadpan the way raw footage does.⁷ --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/09/GigglySquadSiriusXM-HannahBerner-PaigeDeSorbo.webp) Photo by SiriusXM ### Giggly Squad Signs With SiriusXM Hannah Berner and Paige DeSorbo's *Giggly Squad* podcast signed a four-year exclusive distribution deal with SiriusXM, announced September 17, reportedly worth around $160 million. The show is moving over from Acast, though episodes will stay available on YouTube and other platforms. New exclusive programming under the deal is planned for 2027.⁸ I don't listen to Giggly Squad myself, but as a fan of Summer House, I've watched this show's trajectory closely, and I never would have guessed it would grow to where it has. This podcast almost certainly played a role in helping Hannah Berner's stand-up career take off the way it has. I don't know much about podcast deals outside of the famous Rogan-Spotify one, but it's interesting to see a move like this happen in this direction. Usually we see people moving away from Sirius into other spaces, like Howard Stern heading to HBO or The Bonfire building out on YouTube and podcast platforms. Giggly Squad started in streaming and is now moving into a more traditional radio-adjacent space. --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/09/SNL-Cold-Open.webp) Photo by Variety ### SNL's Opening Monologue Gets a Familiar Face Ramy Youssef played Mayor Mamdani for the cold open of SNL's September 26 season premiere, his second time in the role after debuting it back in November 2025.⁹ I expect to see him back in this role regularly as Mamdani continues his term. --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/09/images--3--1.jpeg) Photo by Peacock Facebook Page ### Production News on The Burbs Peacock renewed *The 'Burbs*, starring Keke Palmer and Jack Whitehall, for a second season back in April 2026, following a blockbuster debut that racked up 1.7 billion viewing minutes.¹⁰ Production on Season 2 has now officially begun, per a recent social media announcement. Season 1 was great because of a stacked cast, so even if I'm not particularly invested in where the story goes, I'm going to tune in for Season 2 regardless. --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/09/Yellowjackets_309_DS_0923_1431_RT.webp) Photo by Variety ### Yellowjackets Sets Its Final Season *Yellowjackets* was renewed for a fourth season on May 20, 2025, and confirmed as the show's final season that October. The Season 4 premiere date, November 20, was announced on August 20, 2026\. The final season streams on Paramount+ with the Premium plan before it airs on Showtime.¹¹ I watch this show exclusively on Netflix, so it'll be a while until I get to see it for myself. All I'm asking for is some real resolution, even if it's not a happy ending. --- **Sources** 1. This year, Ashley Padilla and Jane Wickline were the two bumped up to repertory status.¹ Padilla played Natalie Harp opposite Ramy Youssef's Mayor Mamdani in the cold open, his second time in the role after debuting it back in November.² Jane Wickline also got a notable turn playing AI executive Dario Amodei during Weekend Update.³ --- ### Jalen Brunson Held His Own as Host For an athlete, Brunson did a great job. They brought out other Knicks players to ask him questions during his monologue,⁴ and the sketches were tailored to him somewhat, with basketball being the focus of two sketches. One was a High School Musical parody featuring Jeremy Culhane as the standout cast member, and it was hilarious.⁵ --- ### The New Cast Is Already Finding Their Footing Grace Reiter showed out in a sketch pretty early on in the night, a Katseye tie-in called Dream Academy.⁶ Saidah Belo-Osagie was also featured in that same sketch, but not to the same extent. Reiter was also in the last sketch of the night, and without saying much, she is funny. She has staked her claim as the raunchy member of the cast. --- ### Standout Sketches and Performances A sketch taking place at the airport is always a win and relatable, especially when Mikey Day did his best to make Jalen Brunson break. It was nice to see Andrew Dismukes again too; he is so funny and always elevates a sketch, if even just with small facial expressions and reactions. Weekend Update did a great job of recapping what was most popular and in conversation while they were on hiatus. Jeremy Culhane, reprising his role as Tucker Carlson, absolutely crushed it.⁷ He was also in the Shark Tank sketch at the end of the night, and I am so glad he got the screen time he did, because it is well deserved. Ben Marshall also got a lot of screen time, and I think this is because he is a good actor who can jump into any type of sketch and be either the straight man or the funny guy of the scene. I was not able to find anyone who's actually tracked screen time per cast member for this episode, but my guess is that Jeremy and Ben ranked higher than most veteran cast members, which lines up with what's being written about the show so far. --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/09/maxresdefault.jpg) Photo by LateNighter ### The Goodnights Never Miss As usual, the goodnights are my favorite part of the night. Seeing the camaraderie and joy on that stage gives me a feeling I can't describe, only made more emotional by the band playing in the background. It was so cool to see [Grace Reiter and Saidah Belo-Osagie](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/snl-season-52-cast-shakeup-reiter-belo-osagie/) excited at the end of the night. That is not always how it goes your first year, they should be pumped they got some screen time. I am looking forward to the rest of the season. --- **Sources** 1. Trailer Trash Tammy, Miss Crystal, and Tina Dybal brought the house down at Del Lago Resort and Casino on September 19th. This was a fun show, and one that worked because of how it was built, not just who was on stage. Chelcie Lynn built her career on the viral alter ego Trailer Trash Tammy, a character that first broke out on Vine back in 2013 and has carried her through more than a decade of stand-up touring, a spot on Variety's Top 10 Comics to Watch in 2021, and film credits including Tangerine.⁴ ⁵ Libbie Higgins, who tours with her regularly, is known online for a different viral character, but I know her best from the persona she plays on the Trailer Tales podcast, Miss Crystal. Tina Dybal, a St. Louis based comic and Higgins' co-host on the Slop City podcast, rounded out the lineup.⁶ --- ### The Format Was the Real Star Unlike a typical stand-up show, the openers each did a quick 10 minutes or so before Chelcie Lynn took over for about 30\. The energy didn't dip and build toward her the way it does at a lot of shows where you're waiting for the headliner to get going. Tina's set felt a little less polished than the others, but she made up for it with pure energy. Libbie Higgins packed heavy jokes into a short amount of time, tight setups and a fast pace that kept the laughs coming one after another. Chelcie was everything you'd expect from someone who's built a career on this, expressive with her face and body, and enough of a storyteller that you get pulled into wherever the bit is going rather than watching for the punchline. The material itself split cleanly down the middle. Chelcie leaned into storytelling comedy pulled from her own childhood, while Libbie and Tina went raunchier. --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/09/images--2--1.jpeg) Photo by Libbie Higgins ### Miss Crystal Takes Over After the sets, Chelcie brought Libbie out as Miss Crystal for an interactive bit called Win a Date with Miss Crystal, and thankfully for whoever won, it wasn't a real date. They were upfront that the bit has gone sideways in the past, but it's clearly become a regular fixture of the show anyway. That's followed by a Q&A pulled from questions the audience writes down before the show starts, something Chelcie does at most of her stops. It's a smart way to generate real improv and material that's specific to each city without stretching a standard stand-up set longer than it needs to be. This crowd's questions leaned raunchy, the kind of material that doesn't need to be repeated here but will almost certainly turn into clips as the tour continues. --- ### A Packed Room for a Second Visit This was Chelcie's second stop at Del Lago in about a year, and the crowd was bigger than expected for a repeat visit. Having seen other acts come through this venue, she pulled a noticeably larger audience than most. That's less about the venue and more about her, and the type of comedy she's built her name on. She's a great fit for Central New York. --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/09/IMG_3176-1.jpeg) ### The Verdict I think the timing of the whole show was great, and I almost preferred it to a typical stand-up night. Instead of an hour of straight stand-up, the mix of set time and interactive segments pushed everyone, Chelcie included, to improvise more than a standard format usually asks for. This just confirmed her flexibility and comedy chops. That structure is what made the night feel different from a typical comedy show, not just funnier, but a deeper experience. --- **Sources** 1. She joined the core sketch team at American High, the Syracuse-based production company, and became a regular in their daily short-form videos.² One of her skits, a 42-minute parody of The Hunger Games that she also wrote and directed, has racked up 13 million views on YouTube alone.³ That kind of output is what landed her a role in HBO's The Chair Company and, this year, a spot as one of Variety's 10 Creators to Watch.⁴ She's now set to star in American High's Netflix series Minimum Wage, a 28-episode order about teenagers working at a pizzeria, which was filmed in the Syracuse area and follows original shorts that have pulled in more than 30 million views combined across platforms.³ Today she's sitting at 3.9 million TikTok followers and nearly 700,000 YouTube subscribers,² which makes her one of the most online hires SNL has made in recent memory. --- ### Saidah Belo-Osagie: A Quieter Path with a Viral Moment of Her Own Belo-Osagie's route to SNL looked almost nothing like Reiter's. She grew up in Elmont, New York, the daughter of Nigerian immigrants, studied philosophy, politics, and economics at the University of Pennsylvania, and graduated in 2018.⁵ Her first jobs were entirely behind the camera. She interned at Tribeca Productions on the Netflix miniseries When They See Us, then worked as an assistant on ABC's For Life and Netflix's Kaleidoscope.⁵ She didn't fully pivot to comedy until she wrote and directed the short film Tinge in 2020, which went on to play New York area festivals including Newfest.⁵ From there she built Afrobeats Futura, a recurring event series celebrating African diaspora artists that won a Soho House Unsung Hero Award,⁶ and a solo clown show called Saidah Gets Closure, about surviving heartbreak, that she performed around New York.⁵ Her actual brush with virality came from a TikTok, a skit joking about the upside of gentrification that pulled in more than 2.4 million views and, by her own account, kicked up a real firestorm of reaction online.⁷ She quit her day job entirely in 2024 to chase comedy full time,⁸ and her SNL hire carries its own historical weight. She's just the ninth Black woman to join the cast as a featured player in the show's more than 50 year history, following performers like Danitra Vance, Ellen Cleghorne, and Sasheer Zamata.⁹ I'm not familiar with either of them yet, but I'm genuinely curious to see how the two of them measure up against the cast members they're stepping in for. --- ### Who's Actually Leaving, and Who Got Promoted The confirmed exits are Chloe Fineman, who announced her departure back in July after seven seasons, and Bowen Yang, who left mid-season in December.¹⁰ On the promotion side, Ashley Padilla and Jane Wickline were bumped up to repertory status heading into this season.¹⁰ The more layered story is Please Don't Destroy. John Higgins left the writers' room first, back in the spring, and that's the same day Ben Marshall was promoted from writer to featured player, making him the only one of the trio to land an actual cast spot.¹¹ Then, just weeks before this premiere, Martin Herlihy confirmed he wouldn't be returning either.¹² So the trio as an SNL writing unit is officially done, though they're still touring together outside the show, including a stop in Buffalo on September 12 at Asbury Hall.¹¹ --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/09/MV5BODQ1YWVlOTctMzNjMy00YzlmLTgxNjItNzVhOGYwMDVhZDllXkEyXkFqcGc@._V1_.jpg) Photo by IMDB ### What the Cast Did on Break Ben Marshall had a full plate before even making the jump to featured player. He co-starred with Marcello Hernández and Kam Patterson in Netflix's [72 Hours](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/the-deep-dive-august-13-2026/) opposite Kevin Hart, and also guest-starred in an episode of Poker Face season two.¹³ Kam Patterson had a steady run too. He co-starred in 72 Hours, appeared in the film Busboys, and has an upcoming rom-com, Love Love.¹⁴ Marcello Hernández had one of the busiest off-seasons on the cast. He hosted the 2026 ESPYs, first time the show was back in New York since 1999,¹⁵ dropped his debut Netflix special American Boy in January, which landed in the Top 10, and ran a packed stand-up tour that included sold-out Spanish-language shows in South Florida that kept adding dates.¹⁶ --- ### This Season's First Wave of Hosts The lineup NBC has announced so far is a good mix. Jalen Brunson kicks off the premiere on September 26, fresh off leading the Knicks to their first NBA championship in 53 years and taking home 2026 Finals MVP. He's only the fifth basketball player to ever host and the first active NBA player to do it since LeBron James back in 2007.¹⁷ Dakota Johnson follows on October 3 for her third hosting stint, and then [Shane Gillis](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/netflix-is-a-joke-fest/) returns October 10, also for his third time.¹⁷ I'm genuinely excited to see Gillis back for a third round. He was fired from the show back in 2019, days before he was ever set to appear, after offensive clips from his podcast resurfaced.¹⁸ Watching him rebuild from that into someone SNL now brings back as a recurring host says a lot about how far he's come since. After that, the show takes a two week break before returning October 31 with Obsession breakout Inde Navarrette making her hosting debut.¹⁷ --- **Sources** 1. I was late to the RHONY party, and I still haven't watched the two seasons leading up to this one. But it feels good to finally be in the conversation. Season 16 premiered September 8, and the biggest headline is Carole Radziwill's return, eight years after she left the show following Season 10\. She's back as a "friend," not a full Housewife, and her actual episode debut landed September 15. Carole was definitely a favorite of mine from the OG NY franchise, so it will be a good change to see her with this new group. I'm not locked in on the other storylines yet (returning full timers are Erin Lichy, Sai De Silva, and Jessel Taank, with newcomers Hailey Glassman, Erika Hammond, and Daisy Toye), but I'm sure it's only a matter of time before I'm all caught up. Ultimate Girls Trip helped with that clarity too. --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/09/RHOSLC_S5_GroupCrop.jpg) Photo by The Hollywood Reporter ### Salt Lake City Returns for Season 7 RHOSLC came back September 16 with the full Season 6 cast returning. Lisa Barlow, Mary Cosby, Heather Gay, Angie Katsanevas, Meredith Marks, Bronwyn Newport, and Whitney Rose, plus friend Britani Bateman and newcomer Ashley Quai. This season carries more weight than usual. Production paused in February after Mary Cosby lost her son, Robert Cosby Jr., and resumed the following month without her involvement at first. Her husband, Robert Sr., stepped back in front of the cameras this season to support her. I think they did a great job of honoring Mary's son and showing how she dealt with the situation. It was amazing to see, especially if you have lost a loved one. But let's be honest, even a grave loss is not going to stop this group from causing a scene when cameras are around. This has always been one of my favorite Real Housewives shows, so it is hard to disappoint me. One crossover worth flagging: Bronwyn is heading straight into The Traitors Season 5 castle after this, so we will get to see her play a very different kind of game soon. --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/09/images--3-.jpeg) Photo by bestofbravo on Instagram ### Potomac Welcomes Back a Legacy Face RHOP Season 11 premieres October 11 on Bravo. I am excited for Potomac to be back. I am sorry to say it is the franchise I forget about when it is not on the air, but this season has real fuel behind it. Karen Huger returns as a full time Housewife, and her comeback carries a lot more history than a normal cast return. Karen was convicted on DUI and related charges tied to a March 2024 car crash in Maryland and served jail time before entering a recovery program. She made her public return at BravoCon in November, where she got a standing ovation presenting an award, and she is set to sit down with Andy Cohen to tell her full story during the Season 11 finale. Finding out how the show handles that arc is a big part of why I am tuning back in. The other storyline I am watching closely is Wendy Osefo and her husband Eddie. The couple was arrested in October on multiple felony insurance fraud charges tied to a burglary claim from their Maryland home, with prosecutors alleging that items reported stolen were later found to have been returned to stores before the claim was filed. That is still working through the courts, so how much of it makes it into this season is one of the bigger questions going into the premiere. Rounding out the cast: Gizelle Bryant, Ashley Darby, Stacey Rusch, and Tia Glover all return, newcomer Courtney Ajinça joins the group, and Robyn Dixon and Monique Samuels are back as friends. --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/09/1._full_cast.jpg) Photo by Peacock ### The Traitors Just Locked Down Its Future Peacock renewed The Traitors for three more seasons, taking it through Season 8\. The timing makes sense. The show just swept the [Emmys](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/2026-emmy-awards-recap/), winning all seven categories it was nominated in, including Outstanding Reality Competition Program and a third consecutive win for Alan Cumming as Outstanding Host, the most Emmy wins in a single year for any competition series. Season 4 viewership was up 72 percent over Season 3, so the renewal was less of a question and more of a formality. Before any of that, though, Peacock dropped the Season 5 cast, and it is stacked. Kristin Chenoweth, Dominic Monaghan, Bianca Del Rio, Chloe Kim, Craig Conover, and Joey Graziadei are all heading to the castle, alongside a heavy dose of the Bravo universe: Bronwyn Newport from Salt Lake City, Gizelle Bryant from Potomac, Cynthia Bailey from Atlanta, and Emira Despain from [Next Gen NYC](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/the-deep-dive-september-13-2026/). Twenty-three players total, no official premiere date yet, but Peacock is promising 2027\. NBC's all civilian spinoff, The Traitors: New Blood, already premiered September 17 to hold fans over in the meantime. --- ### Jeff Lewis Is Back on Bravo Still Flipping Out premieres September 28, eight years after the original Flipping Out ended. Being a fan of Bravo only for the last few years, I don't know much about Jeff Lewis except for his friendship with Andy Cohen and his appearances on Watch What Happens Live. I don't know if this show will score the same ratings as the other franchises, but it's giving passion project energy. I will be curious to see the ratings. The new season follows Jeff and his circle, chief of staff Shane Douglas, social media manager Annie Sharp, radio producer Jamison Scala, and housekeeper Aurora Chavez, with a rotating cast of guests, including a cameo from Andy Cohen himself. ### 2026 Emmy Awards Recap URL: https://www.layeredentertainment.com/2026-emmy-awards-recap/ Last updated: 2026-09-18T11:13:01.000Z 78th Primetime Emmy Awards — Major Category Winners · September 14, 2026 | Category | Winner | Show | Network | Notable | | ----------------------------- | -------------------- | --------------------------- | -------------- | --------------------------------------------------- | | Outstanding Comedy Series | Widow's Bay | Widow's Bay | Apple TV+ | 14 total wins — new all-time comedy record | | Lead Actress — Comedy | Jean Smart | Hacks (Max) | Max | 5th consecutive win — 8th career Emmy★ Record | | Lead Actor — Comedy | Matthew Rhys | Widow's Bay (Apple TV+) | Apple TV+ | Also won Lead Actor Drama same night★ Historic | | Supporting Actress — Comedy | Kate O'Flynn | Widow's Bay (Apple TV+) | Apple TV+ | First Emmy nomination and win | | Supporting Actor — Comedy | Stephen Root | Widow's Bay (Apple TV+) | Apple TV+ | Thanked co-nominee Harrison Ford in speech | | Writing — Comedy | Katie Dippold | Widow's Bay (Apple TV+) | Apple TV+ | | | Directing — Comedy | Hiro Murai | Widow's Bay (Apple TV+) | Apple TV+ | First Asian director to win this category★ Historic | | Guest Actress — Comedy | Betty Gilpin | Widow's Bay (Apple TV+) | Apple TV+ | Accepted with a poem | | Guest Actor — Comedy | Rob Reiner | The Bear (Hulu) | Hulu | Posthumous — standing ovation† | | Outstanding Drama Series | The Pitt | The Pitt (Max) | Max | Led all nominees with 25 noms | | Lead Actress — Drama | Rhea Seehorn | Pluribus (Apple TV+) | Apple TV+ | First win after years of BCS snubs★ Overdue | | Lead Actor — Drama | Noah Wyle | The Pitt (Max) | Max | | | Lead Actor — Drama (2nd) | Matthew Rhys | The Beast in Me | Apple TV+ | Won two lead actor awards same night★ Historic | | Writing — Drama | Vince Gilligan | Pluribus (Apple TV+) | Apple TV+ | First individual win after 23 nominations★ Overdue | | Lead Actress — Limited Series | Sally Field | Remarkably Bright Creatures | Netflix | Called out WB/Paramount merger in speech | | Outstanding Variety Series | The Late Show | Stephen Colbert (CBS) | CBS | Final season — show was cancelled | | Animated Program | South Park | Comedy Central | Comedy Central | First win since 2013 | | Reality Competition | The Traitors | Peacock | Peacock | 6 trophies total — Cumming didn't attend | | Unstructured Reality | Love on the Spectrum | Netflix | Netflix | Beat Summer House's first-ever nomination | | Reality Host | Alan Cumming | The Traitors (Peacock) | Peacock | Third consecutive win — did not attend | **†** Posthumous award. She arrived on the red carpet dressed as a golden Emmy statuette. Literally. She took the theme, committed to it completely, and reminded everyone why she is in a league entirely her own. It was the best content to come out of the whole night and it had not even started yet.² --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/09/19832982_091426-cc-getty-emmys-widows-bay-comedy-win-img.jpg) Photo by ABC7 **Widow's Bay Made Emmy History — And Exposed a Real Problem** Going into the night Widow's Bay already had eight Creative Arts wins under its belt. By the time the Primetime ceremony ended, the Apple TV horror comedy had collected 14 total Emmys from 19 nominations, setting a new all-time record for most wins by a comedy series in a single year.³ Outstanding Comedy Series. Outstanding Lead Actor for Matthew Rhys. Outstanding Supporting Actress for Kate O'Flynn. Outstanding Supporting Actor for Stephen Root. Outstanding Comedy Writing for creator Katie Dippold. And Outstanding Comedy Directing for Hiro Murai. I wrote in my nominations piece that I had never heard of this show despite 19 nominations, and blamed Apple TV's marketing. I stand by that criticism. But I also think what happened last night says something bigger than marketing. Apple TV has a specific relationship with the Television Academy that is becoming impossible to ignore. When a show sweeps 14 categories in a single night on a platform that a huge portion of viewers still do not have, it raises real questions about who is watching, who is voting, and what the Emmys are actually measuring. Widow's Bay may be a genuinely great show — the numbers suggest it is — but the dominance feels like it left very little room to celebrate anyone else. Abbott Elementary walked away with nothing despite seven nominations. Margo's Got Money Troubles, with eight nominations including a frontrunner in Nick Offerman for Lead Actor, did not convert. Hacks had 24 nominations and came away with one win. These are not bad shows. They are exceptional shows that got steamrolled by a sweep, which is its own kind of story. --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/09/RP_B1004.webp) Photo by Variety **Hiro Murai — The Director Worth Knowing** Hiro Murai winning Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series for Widow's Bay is the win I most want to talk about. He became the first Asian director to win that category in Emmy history, and only the third Asian director to win in any Emmy directing category at all.⁴ If you have read the Atlanta piece on this site, you already know why Murai's name matters. He directed the pilot and nearly 30 episodes of Atlanta for Donald Glover — one of the most creative and ambitious shows made in the last decade. He also won a Grammy for directing the music video for Childish Gambino's This Is America.⁵ Katie Dippold said she was watching Atlanta while rewriting Widow's Bay and that Murai was her dream director from the start.⁶ The Atlanta connection to Widow's Bay is one of the most interesting creative throughlines of this entire Emmy cycle and it deserves more attention than it is getting. --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/09/images.jpeg) Photo by The Atlantic **Jean Smart Made History Too** Hacks did not win Best Comedy Series — Widow's Bay swept that category — but Jean Smart made history anyway. A record inside a loss is still a record, and Jean Smart has earned every single one of them. --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/09/6aa99a673bcca1160d6de3a6.webp) Photo by iHeart **Matthew Rhys Won Twice in One Night** Matthew Rhys won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Widow's Bay and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series for The Beast in Me, making him the first actor to win two lead acting Emmys in the same night.⁸ I had not heard of him before this ceremony — comedy is where most of my attention goes and he has built his career largely in drama. Rhea Seehorn won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Pluribus — her first Primetime Emmy win after two nominations for Better Call Saul, a show that went 0 for 53 nominations across its entire run and holds the distinction of being the most snubbed show in Emmy history.⁹ In her speech, Seehorn choked up and said "Thank you, Vince Gilligan, for giving me not only the role of a lifetime, but for creating sets where we all get to collaborate, and we are actually made to feel safe to take risks so that we get better as artists."¹⁰ In the same night, Vince Gilligan won Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series for the Pluribus pilot "We Is Us" — his first individual Emmy win despite having created Breaking Bad, one of the most celebrated dramas in television history, and co-creating Better Call Saul.¹¹ Breaking Bad won 16 Emmys from 58 nominations, none of them for Gilligan's own writing or directing. Better Call Saul ran six seasons, earned 53 nominations, and won nothing. Not a single award. Now in one night, Pluribus broke that streak for both of them simultaneously. Gilligan got his start writing on The X-Files in 1995\. He created Breaking Bad. He co-created Better Call Saul. He waited decades for individual recognition and got it on the same night the woman he cast in his previous show finally got hers.¹² That is not just a good Emmy story. That is television history. You already know Rhea Seehorn from Better Call Saul. If you have not watched Pluribus yet, last night gave you every reason to start. --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/09/19832967_091426-cc-getty-emmys-pitt-cast-crew-img.jpg) Photo by ABC7 **Drama — The Pitt and Rhea Seehorn** The Pitt won Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Noah Wyle, despite leading all nominees going into the ceremony with 25 nominations.¹³ The show walked away with relatively few wins given its nomination count, which is its own kind of story about how concentrated Widow's Bay's sweep actually was. --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/09/The-Late-Show-with-Stephen-Colbert-emmys-award-2026-H.webp) Photo by The Hollywood Reporter **Stephen Colbert Said Goodbye** The Late Show with Stephen Colbert won Outstanding Variety Series for the third and final time during Colbert's run as host, months after CBS cancelled the show following 33 years on the air.¹⁴ The win was bittersweet and Colbert made sure everyone felt it. He opened his speech by saying "I just want to point out that if you like the comedy tonight, my old writers wrote it," and used the moment to publicly advocate for his over 200 former staff members. "I've got some great news: they are all tech-avail. Hire them."¹⁵ He closed with "I have never loved my country more desperately. God bless America. Stay strong, be brave, and if the elevator tries to bring you down, go crazy and put to the higher floor."¹⁶ Jimmy Kimmel echoed similar sentiments on the Tonight Show the night after, calling it one of the best Emmy speeches in recent memory. There is something worth sitting with about a show that got cancelled by a network for political reasons walking away with an Emmy and using that platform to say exactly what it wanted to say one final time. That is Colbert at his best. --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/09/Sally-Field-accepts-the-Outstanding-Lead-Actress-Emmys-2026-H.webp) Photo by The Hollywood Reporter **Sally Field Called Out the Warner Bros/Paramount Merger** Sally Field won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series for Remarkably Bright Creatures and used her acceptance speech to say directly: "We can't let those voices be silenced or compromised or merged."¹⁷ If you have read the HBO vs Netflix piece on this site, you already know why that line lands so specifically. The merger conversation is not just a business story — it is a creative freedom story. Field said it better in one sentence than most industry analysts have managed in entire articles. --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/09/download.jpeg) Photo by LA Times **The Tribute to Catherine O'Hara** The tribute to Catherine O'Hara was one of the most emotional moments of the evening. Maybe it was. But the math does not quite add up when you look at what went home empty. Abbott Elementary has been one of the most consistently praised network comedies in years. Seven nominations. Zero wins. Margo's Got Money Troubles came into the night with eight nominations and genuine frontrunner buzz around Nick Offerman for Lead Actor in a Comedy. Zero wins. Hacks set an all-time record for comedy nominations with 24 and converted exactly one — Jean Smart's fifth consecutive win, which she would have won regardless of the show's overall performance. The Bear competed as a comedy for the last time in its history. Zero wins beyond the posthumous Rob Reiner guest acting award at the Creative Arts ceremony. This is not a complaint about Widow's Bay. It is an observation about what happens when one show sweeps an entire category. The other nominees stop being contenders and start being footnotes, which is not a fair reflection of a television landscape that has been excellent this year across multiple formats and networks. --- **Sources** 1. Here Is What We Already Know URL: https://www.layeredentertainment.com/emmys-2026-creative-arts-recap/ Last updated: 2026-09-14T16:00:37.000Z **The Emmys Are Tonight. Here Is What Already Happened.** The Primetime Emmy ceremony airs tonight on NBC hosted by Mariska Hargitay, and the big categories — Comedy Series, Drama Series, and all the acting leads — are still undecided as of this writing. But the Creative Arts ceremonies already handed out awards on September 5th and 6th,¹ and there is already more than enough to react to. --- **The Moment That Mattered Most** Rob Reiner won Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for [The Bear,](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/the-deep-dive-july-14-2026/) posthumously, after he and his wife Michele Singer Reiner passed away in December 2025.² The crowd gave the win a standing ovation. There is not much more to say about that. It was the right call and the right reaction. He deserved it and the Television Academy handled it with the respect it warranted. --- **Widow's Bay Is Making It Very Hard to Ignore** Going into the Creative Arts weekend, Widow's Bay was the show I had never heard of despite 19 Emmy nominations. Coming out of it, Widow's Bay was the single biggest winner across both nights with eight total awards spanning casting, sound mixing, production design, cinematography, and music.³ Eight awards before the Primetime telecast even airs. I wrote [previously](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/emmy-nominations-2026/) that I had not heard enough about this show and blamed Apple TV's marketing. I stand by that. A dark comedy horror series with a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes and now eight Creative Arts Emmys should not be flying under the radar. Do I gravitate toward comfort shows over dark comedy? Yes. Is Widow's Bay clearly something exceptional regardless of my personal preferences? Also yes. It is going to the top of the Apple TV list when I finally subscribe. --- **South Park Finally Won Again** South Park took Best Animated Program for the first time since 2013.⁴ That is a thirteen year gap. The show has been consistently good for most of that stretch, which tells you everything about how competitive and political Emmy voting can be. A well-deserved win for a show that has earned it many times over. And great timing as they recently annouced a name change to "South America" as a nod to Trump. --- **The Traitors Is Running Away With Reality TV** Six trophies total for The Traitors including a third consecutive host win for Alan Cumming, who did not even show up to collect it in person.⁵ That is a level of confidence that only comes from knowing the outcome in advance. The Traitors is simply one of the best [competition reality shows](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/bravo-changed-my-mind-on-reality-tv/) on television right now and the Emmy record is starting to reflect that. If you have watched any reality or competition TV and have not watched The Traitors, it is almost impossible not to get hooked once you start. --- **Summer House Did Not Win and That Is Okay** Love on the Spectrum took Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program,⁶ ending [Summer House's](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/summer-house-will-never-be-the-same/) nomination run without a win. I am surprised but not devastated. If anything was going to beat Summer House this cycle it was always going to be Love on the Spectrum. It is exactly the kind of show that the Television Academy gravitates toward — wholesome, universally accessible, the kind of content that anyone regardless of age or demographic can sit down and watch together. Bravo skews younger and more female, which is not a criticism, but it is a reality that affects how voters see it. Summer House getting nominated in the first place was the win. The recognition matters even without the trophy. --- **Bad Bunny Made History and Is Now Halfway to an EGOT** The Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show Starring Bad Bunny swept all seven of its nominations, winning Outstanding Variety Special Live, music direction, choreography, sound mixing, lighting design, technical direction and camerawork, and directing. Seven out of seven nominations, making it the most awarded Super Bowl halftime show in Emmy history⁸, and putting Bad Bunny halfway to EGOT status. He already has his Grammys. The Oscar and Tony are what stand between him and one of the rarest achievements in entertainment. Given the trajectory he is on, it does not feel impossible. Sabrina Carpenter also won her first Emmy as executive producer and performer on The Muppet Show reboot, defeating Taylor Swift's Eras Tour Final Show in the pre-recorded variety special category. Carpenter is also now halfway to an EGOT following her Grammy wins in 2025.⁹ Taylor Swift walked away with nothing from five nominations, which is its own kind of headline. --- **What Tonight Still Holds** The categories that actually define the Emmy conversation have not been decided yet. Best Comedy Series. Best Drama Series. Jean Smart potentially tying the record for most acting Emmy wins in history if she wins for [Hacks.](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/hbo-vs-netflix-quality-vs-quantity/)⁷ Widow's Bay trying to extend its Creative Arts momentum into the Primetime broadcast. The Bear competing as a comedy for the last time. All of it happens tonight. A full recap will be up later this week once the dust settles. Season 18 of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia premiered on August 17th on FXX, FX, and Hulu, and it is off to an incredible start. The show has held a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes through its early episodes this season, which says everything about the consistency these people have maintained across two decades. This season expanded to ten episodes, up from eight in the previous three seasons. The pacing feels consistent with what the show has always done — a new scheme per episode, the Gang being terrible, everything falling apart in exactly the right way. The extra episodes are a welcome addition. The only thing the expansion has me thinking about is whether this is the final lap. The show was renewed through Season 18 back in 2020, and while it has not been presented as the final season, ten episodes instead of eight feels like it could be a send-off gesture. I hope I am wrong. The longest-running live-action comedy in television history deserves to keep going as long as they have material this good. --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/09/TIRES_301_260116_JK_00232_R-e1788147951958.webp) Photo by Variety **Tires Renewed for Season 4** After hitting number five on Netflix's Global Top 10 English TV list the week of August 17th and accumulating more than 45 million views across three seasons since its 2024 debut, [Tires](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/the-deep-dive-august-30-2026/) has earned an early renewal for Season 4\. The numbers are impossible to argue with. What I will argue with is the direction the show is heading. I wrote about this in detail after Season 3 dropped, and I am doubling down now. The production quality shift is real. The original low-budget feel that made the show what it was is gone, replaced with fantasy sequences, upgraded locations, and a more polished look throughout. Did the better production lead to more people watching? Probably. Did good marketing also play a role? Almost certainly. But a bigger budget does not automatically mean a better show. Tires built its audience on authenticity and specificity, and now it needs to earn its viewership back through storytelling rather than production value. Season 4 is the test. I will be watching closely. --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/09/next-gen-nyc-season-2-bravo_3e93ca.webp) Photo by Deadline **Next Gen NYC Is the Best Thing on Bravo Right Now** This show does not have much competition at the moment, but every episode has me more excited for the next one. Next Gen NYC has found its footing faster than almost any new [Bravo](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/bravo-changed-my-mind-on-reality-tv/) franchise I can remember, and the season finale proved why. Two moments stand out. First, Charlie pulling Ariana in for what can only be described as a full rom-com moment. Fast, unexpected, bold in a way we have not seen from him all season. For as chaotic as Ariana has been leading up to that scene, it landed as one of the most genuinely romantic things to happen on a Bravo show in recent memory. Nobody saw it coming and that is exactly why it worked. Second, Charlie comparing his life to Curb Your Enthusiasm and the editors actually dropping the Curb theme music and tag into the episode. This is the comedy and reality TV crossover we needed. It is the kind of self-aware moment that elevates a franchise from fun to genuinely interesting. The reunion is going to be a lot. The speculation around Ava Dash and Kyle Cooke has been everywhere, and my honest take is that Ava is in it for the publicity and the clout. [Bravo](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/the-deep-dive-august-13-2026/) should not take the bait by giving that storyline more airtime than it deserves, and I really hope Summer House does not become the vehicle for it next season. Some things are better left off camera. --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/09/Tony-Hinchcliffe-Kill-Tony-Netflix-2.webp) Photo by Variety **Kill Tony Is Bringing in Older Comics and It Is Working** There has been a noticeable trend on [Kill Tony](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/kill-tony-comics-to-watch/) lately. Maybe younger comics are realizing the show will highlight how bad they are. Maybe people are sick of waiting at the bar waiting to be pull. I do not know, but at least one bucket pull per episode has been landing on an older comic. Someone who has already lived their life and is showing up to the Comedy Mothership to try something new. The September 7th episode featured Yakov Smirnoff and Ari Matti as headliners, and somewhere in the bucket pulls that night was the moment that crystallized this trend for me. An older gentleman, bow tie and all, got up there with a confidence that had nothing to do with needing the moment to go well. He was a scientist by trade. Stand-up was something new he was trying. And he was genuinely funny in a way that felt completely effortless. What makes these older comics so compelling is exactly what you would expect. They are not trying to change their lives with this appearance. They are not desperate for the exposure. They get up there, tell some jokes, give an interview that is authentic to who they actually are, and leave. That lack of desperation is its own kind of comedy. It is a different energy entirely from someone who needs this moment to mean something, and it makes them immediately more likable and more watchable. Kill Tony has always been about discovering what happens when you put someone in front of a microphone with a minute to prove themselves. Turns out it works just as well when that person has already lived a full life and is just showing up to try something new. --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/09/Sex-Life-of-College-Girls-Season-2-What-We-Know-01.webp) Photo by US Weekly **The Sex Lives of College Girls Landed on Netflix, and I Regret Not Watching Sooner** All three seasons of The Sex Lives of College Girls dropped on Netflix on August 31st, and I am very much in it right now. The show originally premiered on HBO Max on November 18, 2021 and ran for three seasons before being cancelled in March 2025\. I missed it entirely the first time around. That was a mistake. Created by Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble, the show follows four college roommates at the fictional Essex College navigating hookup culture, dorm life, sports teams, fraternities, and the overwhelming experience of figuring out who you are when you are surrounded by that many other people all at once. The accuracy of those storylines is what gets you. The sports storylines, the fraternity dynamics, the specific chaos of trying to juggle everything while still figuring out your own identity. It all rings true in a way that most college-set shows do not bother to get right. Reneé Rapp left after Season 2 to focus on her music career and was only in the first two episodes of Season 3\. That transition is noticeable. The show tried to fill her absence with additional subcharacters and subplots that did not all earn their screen time, and you can feel the gap she left. It did not ruin the season but it disrupted the rhythm of the original four in a way that took some adjusting to. Contrary to Kaling's most recent project, the writing here is impeccable. This show is part of what I think of as a loose trilogy Kaling has been building. Never Have I Ever covers the high school experience, The Sex Lives of College Girls draws on her time at Dartmouth, and Not Suitable for Work was meant to be the early career chapter. That framework is ambitious and worth appreciating. But it also says something bigger about Hollywood. Kaling can build this trilogy because she has earned the right to make what she wants. Someone else could pitch these exact same shows and never hear back from a single network. The content is not the variable. The name attached to it is. That is worth sitting with. If you have a Netflix subscription and have not started this show yet, I highly recommend it. ### JokeWrld Fest 2026 Review URL: https://www.layeredentertainment.com/jokewrld-fest-comics-2026/ Last updated: 2026-09-03T16:00:18.000Z [**JokeWrld**](https://www.jokewrldfest.com/?ref=layeredentertainment.com) **Fest 2026: The Comics Worth Knowing** Working front of house at JokeWrld Fest meant I caught most of the weekend in glimpses — a few minutes of a set here, a walk-past there, the tail end of a bit while managing a crowd. It was not the way I would have chosen to experience the festival if given the option, but it gave me something a ticket holder never gets. I saw these comics in the hallways, in line for the bathroom, walking between venues. There was no backstage barrier, no green room mystique. They were just people, doing the same thing everyone else was doing, and that changed how I see all of them. This is not a full review of every set. I did not see enough of anyone to give you that. What I can give you is an honest account of who caught my attention, who I wish I had seen, and why all of them are worth paying attention to. --- **Who I Caught** [**Casey Rocket**](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/kill-tony-comics-to-watch/) was everything I expected and then some. He owned the stage from the moment he walked out — physically moving through every inch of the space the way only he does, making the room feel smaller and more his with every step. I have written about Casey before on Layered, but seeing him at JokeWrld confirmed everything. He is dynamic in a way that translates whether you are watching from a seat or catching the last two minutes from the doorway. **Timmy No Brakes** was listed as a surprise guest, which I clocked the second he walked in. He was not on any schedule I had seen and the energy shifted immediately when he appeared. If you have read the Kill Tony piece on this site, you already know what he does — the line between stand-up and improv, the persona he inhabits so fully it sometimes works against him. At JokeWrld it worked completely. A great surprise addition to the weekend. **Jeremiah Watkins** has an energy that fills a room before he even starts a bit. What I caught of his set was high octane from the first second, the kind of performer who makes the people around you lean forward without realizing it. **Uncle Lazer** was an absolute riot on and off the stage, and he is now firmly on my list of must-sees. If you do not know him yet, here is the short version: Texas-born, spent over a decade working in the oil fields before transitioning to stand-up, broke through on Kill Tony with a raw blue-collar style that does not resemble anything else in that universe. He was just as funny walking around the festival as he was on stage, which is either very rare or very telling about who he actually is. Either way, add him to your list. **Brendan Sagalow** was a genuine discovery for me at the festival. NYC-based with over a decade in stand-up, a Just For Laughs New Face in 2022, and a debut special called *Thin Lips* on YouTube that I went and watched after seeing him. Sharp observational comedy with self-deprecation that actually lands rather than just filling time. The kind of comic you find at a festival and immediately wonder why you had not heard of before. [**Greg Fitzsimmons**](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/netflix-is-a-joke-fest/) is a veteran in the best sense of the word. Seeing him in a festival environment alongside comics who are just starting to build their names puts his craft into context immediately. He makes it look effortless in a way that only comes from doing it for decades. His presence on a lineup like this legitimizes the whole weekend. [**Joe DeRosa**](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/the-deep-dive-august-30-2026/) I have already talked about in the JokeWrld recap piece — a brief interaction that changed the energy of the whole weekend. I caught some of his set and it was exactly what you would expect from someone who has been doing this long enough to make it feel completely natural. Six charting albums and a reputation for dark, precise comedy that earns every laugh rather than chasing them. I also caught glimpses of **Jack Shaw**, **Brent Weinbach**, **Tommy Pope**, **Tim Butterly**, **Peyton Ruddy**, and **Ehsan Ahmad** throughout the weekend. Not enough to give any of them a proper assessment, but enough to know I would see all of them again without hesitation. ![Casey Rocket](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/08/unnamed.webp) Photo by JokeWrld --- **Who I Missed — and Why It Stings** The showcase I most wanted to see and did not get to was the female comics showcase. It featured **Jessie "Jetski" Johnson**, **Liz Splatt**, **Christina Mariani**, and **Maddie Mays**, among others, and it was exactly the kind of lineup that makes a festival worth attending in the first place. Female comics are still underrepresented in the circuit that JokeWrld draws from, so getting several of the best ones on the same stage at the same time is not something you pass up lightly. I passed it up because I was working, which is the right reason to miss something and also the most frustrating one. **Liz Splatt** is the 2024 Funniest Person in Austin and a Kill Tony regular whose rapid-fire delivery and candid observations have built her a real following in the Austin scene. **Jessie "Jetski" Johnson** is a festival circuit staple who keeps showing up on lineups worth paying attention to. **Maddie Mays** is someone I wanted to know more about going in and still want to know more about coming out. She recently made a list of rising talent to watch. I also missed **Sam Tallent**, which stings separately. He is not just a stand-up — he is a novelist with a Random House deal, and the multi-disciplinary creative angle makes his comedy more interesting to me, not less. The kind of person who brings something to a set beyond the set itself. And **Tim Butterly**, who released a new special on YouTube just three days before the festival aired. The timing alone made him someone to watch that weekend. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/08/unnamed--2-.webp) Photo by JokeWrld --- **What the Festival Taught Me About All of Them** Seeing comics in a festival environment where they are walking the same hallways, using the same bathrooms, talking to whoever approaches them changes something. They are not hidden backstage or surrounded by handlers. They are just there, and you realize quickly that the distance you feel watching someone on a screen is entirely constructed. Every one of these people is reachable, accessible, and in most cases genuinely happy to be there. I will be back next year. And next year, I am going to see the female showcase along with many others. Weeks later, I still feel so grateful for the chance to be a part of such a great experience. I hope this festival is around for years to come. --- Comedian Andy Malafarina, who performed at the festival, summed it up better than I ever could. His breakdown is definitely worth the watch: ### The Deep Dive — Aug 30, 2026 URL: https://www.layeredentertainment.com/the-deep-dive-august-30-2026/ Last updated: 2026-08-30T16:00:19.000Z ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/08/images--3-.jpeg) Photo by The Hollywood Reporter **Tires Season 3 — Netflix** It is only right to start here. Round of applause to everyone involved in making Season 3 of [Tires](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/thequeue/), especially the people local to Pennsylvania who would not have opportunities like this without the show. That part of what Tires does has never changed and should not go unacknowledged. That said, Season 3 felt like a new show to me almost immediately. The humor was there and consistent with previous seasons, but the storytelling choices made it clear that new writers had come on board. The storylines go much more in depth than anything in Seasons 1 and 2, and some of the B storylines go further than they need to. The women's get-together that Will attends, the episode where Kilah runs into her high school volleyball team — these feel like filler. They do not add anything to the main plot of saving the tire shop, and they distract from it in a way that the previous seasons never did. It is almost too easy to see what McKeever would have cut. The B storylines, for starters. The biggest contrast from previous seasons is that two seasons were dedicated to saving the tire shop, and now the show has shifted to focus primarily on Shane's love life. In Seasons 1 and 2, Shane's love life existed to give the character depth and define who he was to the audience. Now it has become the main plot, and the lack of congruency with what came before is hard to ignore. I like consistency. The way the story is being told now is not bad. It is just different. They did a lot of things right though, and I want to be clear about that. The opening scene is one of the most memorable and unexpected ways to start a new season I have seen in a while. Without spoiling it, someone dies at the very beginning, and the uniqueness of the situation makes it funny in a way you would not expect from an opening scene. That is a hard thing to pull off. The show is also functioning on a noticeably higher budget, which they made clear with fantasy sequences, daydreams, and everything short of CGI. It looks great. The smaller comics gaining recognition in supporting roles continue to be one of the best things about the show. [Steph Tolev,](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/netflix-is-a-joke-fest/) Stavros Halkias, [Bobby Lee,](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/bad-friends-game-show-this-is-how-you-build-something/) Joe DeRosa, Dan Soder, Tommy Pope, Andrew Schulz, H. Foley — the list goes on. Bobby Lee appearing in more than one episode was the most welcome surprise of the season. I knew going in that he would be in the show but had no idea what his part would be. It turned out to be one of the storylines from Season 3 that actually aids the main plot and could easily continue into later seasons. That should be exciting news for Bobby Lee fans. The show won me over the second I found out he would be making an appearance, and he delivered. Everything I have seen from audiences has been in support of the season, and the number one [Netflix](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/hbo-vs-netflix-quality-vs-quantity/) ranking for over two weeks backs that up. I think an Emmy nomination is possible next cycle. There are enough standout supporting roles this season to earn at least one. For more on Tires and why it deserves more recognition than it gets, it is already on the site. --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/08/images-1.jpeg) Your Mom's House Podcast banner by Spotify **Tom Segura and Christina Pazsitzky — A Comedy Divorce** I am saddened by this news. Christina confirmed tearfully on Your Mom's House that she and [Tom](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/hbo-vs-netflix-quality-vs-quantity/) are divorcing after nearly 20 years together. It feels like my first real celebrity divorce since starting my obsession with comedy, which says a lot about how much their relationship has been part of what I consume. The podcast naming situation is something I cannot stop thinking about. Your Mom's House when Christina hosts. Your Dad's House when Tom hosts. It is almost like they built the whole thing with this moment in mind, which I know they did not, but the irony is too good. I love this naming wordplay so much that it was almost worth it. They both plan to continue working together, which is probably the right call for both of them professionally. What I think happens next is interesting. YMH Studios has been building toward something larger for a while now — live shows, acquired podcasts, a model that increasingly resembles its own streaming network. A divorce does not slow that down. If anything it accelerates both of their individual brands and stops forcing them into a single box together. They are both compelling on their own terms. This might be the thing that makes that clearer than ever. --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/08/6842dacb-e785-45a9-9636-f07b38af0fd4.webp) Series promo poster courtesy of Hulu **Not Suitable for Work — Cancelled by Hulu** Consider me baffled. After a season I thought had been received well, Mindy Kaling's Not Suitable for Work will not be renewed for a second season. This one genuinely shocks me. It had the energy of the next generation's Girls — largely unknown cast, a relatable story for someone in their twenties, the kind of show that takes a season to find its audience. The characters were wealthy and city-dwelling in a way that can feel unrelatable at first, but that is exactly what Girls did and it worked for the people it was made for. The difference is that [Girls](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/hbo-vs-netflix-quality-vs-quantity/) had HBO behind it, and HBO let it breathe. Not Suitable for Work needed that same room for creative development and did not get it. It is flat right now, and flatness on Hulu means cancellation before the story has a chance to build. HBO would have fit the narrative they were building and would have pushed the writing and the script to be stronger and more resonant with the young audience it was going for. Instead it joins a very long list of shows that deserved more time than they got. The one genuinely interesting development is that Warner Bros. Television is shopping it to potential new homes. That is worth tracking. If it could not make it on Hulu and Disney Plus, the options are limited. Netflix would give it visibility but risk losing it in the sea of content. Wherever it lands, I hope it gets another chance. This is Kaling's first sole creator credit since The Mindy Project and it deserved a longer run. --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/08/maxresdefault.jpg) Photo courtesy of Kelly Clarkson Show YouTube page **Will Forte's Mom Has a Sketch Show** This is the kind of project that reminds you why the entertainment industry is worth paying attention to. Will Forte spent years receiving sketch ideas from his mom Patti while he was at SNL — ideas he politely set aside but never forgot. Now he has built an entire show around her and her 82-year-old best friend Carol, giving two people with no formal entertainment background the spotlight in a six-episode sketch series filmed last summer. He debuted a clip on Jimmy Kimmel Live in March. Tina Fey called it potentially the most important comedy show of the 21st century on The Kelly Clarkson Show. Fey is being hyperbolic in the way only Tina Fey can get away with, but I agree with the spirit of what she is saying. In a sea of high-concept, high-budget productions fighting for attention, this is something different. Wholesome, authentic, unpolished by design. Forte compared it to Between Two Ferns, which is exactly the right reference point — the women's enthusiasm is the whole point, not despite their inexperience but because of it. The show is currently looking for a distribution home. My guess is Netflix if Tina Fey's name stays attached to the project, but I would not be surprised to see other networks make a run at it first. Wherever it lands, it will stand out. There is nothing else like it on television right now. --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/08/images--1--1.jpeg) Photo by IMDB **Ali G: Who Iz I? — In Theaters October 23** After more than 20 years, Sacha Baron Cohen is bringing Ali G back. The trailer for *Ali G: Who Iz I?* dropped this week and the internet has not stopped talking about it. Distributed by Amazon MGM and hitting theaters October 23, the film is Cohen's feature directorial debut and was shot in secret the same way Borat was — real people, real situations, no one knowing they are being filmed for a comedy. The premise has Ali G discovering his girlfriend Julie is eight months pregnant and heading to America to reclaim his former glory. The mockumentary format is still as effective as it ever was in Cohen's hands, and at this point nobody else can make a blockbuster film this way. That is just the truth. The trailer is stuffed with exactly the kind of absurdist, confrontational comedy that made the character iconic in the first place, updated for the TikTok and podcast era in ways that feel fresh rather than forced. The backlash has already started — Ali G's fake dreadlocks and Rastafarian hat in the trailer have drawn criticism for cultural appropriation. It is worth acknowledging briefly, but it also feels completely consistent with who Cohen is as a comedian. It is almost like he searched for the thing most likely to provoke the most reaction at this specific moment in time and built the character's look around it. That is not a defense of the choice, but it is an accurate description of how Cohen operates. His brand of ragbait comedy feels like exactly what 2026 needs after a year that has been a lot. The film opens October 23\. Plan accordingly. --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/08/images--2-.jpeg) Photo by Apple.com **Brothers — Apple TV+, Premieres September 23** [Apple TV](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/emmy-nominations-2026/) has done it again. Brothers premieres September 23 and stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as fictionalized versions of themselves who discover they might actually be real brothers. The showrunner is Lee Eisenberg, who wrote for The Office from seasons 2 through 6\. That combination of powerhouse leads with a writer who understands exactly how to navigate the line between reality and fiction in a sitcom format is genuinely exciting. Apple is rounding out the show with serious talent both in front of and behind the camera, which is exactly the pattern they have been following with everything that has earned them Emmy nominations this cycle. Lisa Gilroy appears in the trailer, though her role has not been confirmed. Her presence alone is worth noting. She was just named the rising comedy star of the year at Just For Laughs in Montreal, and after appearances in [Wingman](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/harland-williams-bet-on-himself-and-won/) and other 2026 projects, she is clearly having a moment. Whatever her role turns out to be, seeing her alongside McConaughey and Harrelson signals that the supporting cast is going to be worth paying attention to. This might be the show that finally gets me to subscribe to Apple TV. Eight episodes. September 23. --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/08/images--4--1.jpeg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/08/images--5-.jpeg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/08/images--7-.jpeg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/08/images--6-.jpeg) **Rest in Peace, Dolly Parton** This one cuts deep. Dolly Parton passed away on August 25th in Nashville after a brief battle with cancer. She was 80 years old. Her husband Carl Dean had preceded her in death in March 2025\. The world lost something real this week and it is worth taking a moment to say so. I grew up with Dolly Parton. That is Hannah Montana's godmother. The episode where she helps Miley win over Jake is one of the best episodes the show ever produced — the all-black outfits, the sky-high leather boots she insisted were essential for their stakeout plan. She showed up for that show with genuine love and care for Miley, and you could feel it. She was this enormous star who somehow never lost her connection to what actually matters, especially in the life of a kid. That is rare and it does not go unnoticed even decades later. Her appearance in the [Grace and Frankie](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/thequeue/) series finale is one of the most powerful things I have seen on television. She played an angel — which feels right, because Dolly Parton was an angel in real life. The connection between her and Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin goes back to 9 to 5, so when she appeared at the end of that show it was not just a cameo. It was another layer on a legacy that had been building for fifty years. She was not in many television shows in her time, but the ones she touched are significant and lasting. The world is less bright this week. Put on her music and remember what it felt like to hear it for the first time. ### JokeWrld Fest: I Would Do It Again Tomorrow URL: https://www.layeredentertainment.com/jokewrld-fest-recap-2026/ Last updated: 2026-08-29T22:16:19.000Z ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/08/IMG_3104.jpeg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/08/IMG_3101.jpeg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/08/IMG_3098.jpeg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/08/IMG_3097.jpeg) Comedy festivals are everywhere right now. Netflix is a Joke, Skankfest, South by Southwest — the circuit is crowded and getting more competitive every year. JokeWrld Fest entered that conversation on August 14th and 15th in St. Petersburg, Florida, and did not just show up. They showed out. For a first-year festival built on the back of an internet brand, what they pulled off over two days was genuinely impressive. Two days, multiple venues across downtown, stand-up shows, live podcasts, and a lineup that held its own against festivals that have been running for years. --- **What It Actually Felt Like to Be There** My role was front of house — checking people in, distributing wristbands, helping direct the crowd between shows, and bouncing around to wherever I was needed. Backstage setup, other venues, whatever was useful. Because it was the first year, a lot of the job was figuring things out in real time. I tried to be helpful to whoever was around without always knowing who was important to know and who was just another volunteer. That uncertainty is probably fine. Hopefully doing the work itself is what gets remembered. The main stage at Coastal Creative was something. They converted production stages into two full performance spaces for the weekend, and the rest of the shows happened at smaller venues nearby — some with forty people or fewer. That intimacy was the whole vibe. There was no bad seat. You could walk out of one show, get food, and be in a completely different room with a completely different comic in minutes. That is the kind of festival experience that is hard to manufacture and impossible to fake. The only downside was Florida in August, which I should have mentally prepared for more than I did. --- **Joe DeRosa** The moment that made the whole weekend click into place happened early. I was helping Joe DeRosa get to where he needed to be, and he was kind in a way I was not expecting. He introduced himself, wanted to talk, asked questions. It was a thirty second interaction that made everything after it feel completely normal. After talking with him, I stopped seeing comics as people on a level I could never reach. They are just people. People who have put in the work and figured out how to do the thing they love for a living. That realization made every other interaction over the weekend easier and made the whole experience feel less like being a fan at a festival and more like being part of something. After watching season 3 of Tires, it was very cool to be speaking with Joe DeRosa. I also got a chance to talk with Tommy Pope as well. If season 3 of Tires had not come out, that would not have been as exciting. But alas, everything happens for a reason. --- **What JokeWrld Got Right** Jake, who runs JokeWrld, is the reason this festival worked as well as it did. He stayed calm under pressure, seemed in control of everything happening, and trusted the volunteers enough to be largely hands off throughout the weekend. That kind of leadership is rare and it shows. The branding and marketing were strong. The focus on treating the talent well was evident. These are things that first-year festivals almost always get wrong, and JokeWrld got them right. There is feedback I would offer for next year — logistics things that most people would not notice but that make a real difference. A separate bathroom for comics so they are not standing in line before their sets. More branded touchpoints throughout the venue. Umbrellas for the talent when Florida does what Florida does. Better flow in and out of specific doors at Coastal Creative, which has more space to utilize than they tapped into this year. None of these are criticisms so much as observations. You cannot account for any of it until you know how big the event can actually get. Now they know. --- **The Bigger Thing** The best moment of the weekend had nothing to do with logistics. It was when I found myself talking to other people at the festival about comedy and realizing we were all speaking the same language. That feeling of being exactly where you are supposed to be is rare and worth paying attention to when it shows up. I am grateful for every person I met and what each of them taught me without realizing it. I wish I had talked to Jake more directly and made it clearer that I want to be a bigger part of this next year. I did not go out of my way to make the right connections because that is not how I am built — I would rather do the work and let that speak for itself. Whether that is the right instinct in an industry like this is a question I am still working out. What I know is that I felt completely like myself for the first time in a long time. I would work for free every day if it meant being in that environment. The festival is worth your time, your money, and the drive to St. Petersburg in August heat. Get there next year. ### Everything You Need to Know About the 2026 Emmy Nominations URL: https://www.layeredentertainment.com/emmy-nominations-2026/ Last updated: 2026-08-25T22:52:37.000Z Just some of the Emmy nominations to pay attention to for 2026: ## 78th Primetime Emmy Awards — 2026 Nominations Ceremony: September 14, 2026 · NBC & Peacock · Host: Mariska Hargitay Outstanding Comedy Series | Show | Network | Total Noms | | ---------------------------- | --------- | ---------------- | | Hacks | Max | 24 Season record | | Widow's Bay | Apple TV+ | 19 | | Shrinking | Apple TV+ | 9 | | The Bear | FX / Hulu | 8 | | Margo's Got Money Troubles | Apple TV+ | 8 | | Abbott Elementary | ABC | 7 | | Nobody Wants This | Netflix | — | | Only Murders in the Building | Hulu | — | Comedy Acting Categories | Category | Nominee | Show | | ------------------ | ----------------- | -------------------------------------- | | Lead Actress | Jean Smart | Hacks (Max) | | | Quinta Brunson | Abbott Elementary (ABC) | | | Ayo Edebiri | The Bear (FX) | | | Elle Fanning | Margo's Got Money Troubles (Apple TV+) | | | Lisa Kudrow | Hacks (Max) | | Lead Actor | Jason Segel | Shrinking (Apple TV+) | | | Martin Short | Only Murders in the Building (Hulu) | | | Paul W. Ariana Madix went from Vanderpump Rules Scandoval to Emmy nominated host. · All nominations reflect the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards cycle (June 2025 – May 2026). · Ceremony airs September 14, 2026 on NBC and Peacock. **The 2026 Emmy Nominations: A Reality Check and a Reading List** Oh, the Emmys. Can you think of anything better? A night built entirely around television and the people that make it all possible. September 14th cannot come soon enough. The nominations this year made me feel two things at once. First, that I have my finger on the pulse. I have watched a lot of Emmy-nominated shows this cycle and have strong opinions about most of them. Second, that I have so much homework to do before the ceremony airs. There are shows nominated that I have barely heard of, and that is both humbling and exciting. This is what the Emmys are supposed to do — remind you that there is always more worth watching. One thing worth noting before getting into the individual shows: the comedy field this year has no clear frontrunner.¹ The traditional HBO versus streaming dynamic has shifted, and several surprise inclusions are reshaping how each category will be contested heading into September. That makes this one of the more interesting Emmy races in recent memory. The full nominations chart is above. Here is what I actually think. --- **Abbott Elementary** Abbott Elementary is in its fifth season for Emmy purposes, with Season 6 already renewed and premiering October 7, 2026 on ABC. The show has received 30 Emmy nominations to date, with four wins.² It deserves every single one of them. This is one of the best feel-good sitcoms on television right now. I genuinely believe people will go back and watch Abbott Elementary ten years from now the way they go back to The Office. It has that same quality of making you feel like you are part of something without even trying. That said, I do not expect Abbott to win Best Comedy Series, and I want to be clear that this is not a criticism. A sitcom is not the same animal as Hacks or The Bear in terms of production scale and writing ambition. That does not take away from the storytelling at all. It just puts it in a different category in my mind. Abbott Elementary belongs in the conversation. I just think the scale of what it is up against makes a Best Comedy Series win unlikely. Everything else is fair game. --- **The Bear** I have officially given up on the comedy versus drama debate when it comes to [The Bear](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/hbo-vs-netflix-quality-vs-quantity/). I have accepted that the Television Academy classifies it as a comedy, and I am moving on. But for the record, it feels like a cop-out. The Bear is nominated for its drama storytelling, not its comedy bits or funny quips. There is nothing wrong with what it is. It just is not competing in the right category, in my opinion. With that out of the way, here is the context. The Bear earned 13 nominations and 10 wins in its first season. Season 2 set a new comedy series record with 23 nominations and 11 wins. Season 3 earned 13 nominations and zero wins, the biggest single-year drop for any comedy series in Emmy history.³ Now in its fourth and penultimate season, The Bear has 8 nominations. That trajectory is worth paying attention to. The most significant nomination this cycle is the posthumous nod for Rob Reiner, who passed away alongside his wife Michele Singer Reiner in December 2025\. He appeared as a restaurant adviser in Season 4 and is nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series. That is a meaningful moment, and the Television Academy handled it with the respect it deserved. He is just one of many impressive actors The Bear has been able to attract over its run, which says everything about the reputation the show has built. For more thoughts on the final season, check out The Deep Dive from August 4th. --- **Hacks** [Hacks](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/hbo-vs-netflix-quality-vs-quantity/) leads all comedies with a record 24 nominations for its fifth and final season.⁴ I wish I had discovered this show sooner. I have only been a fan for about a year, and in that time I have realized what a genuinely great series it is from top to bottom. Honestly, I think a large part of the 24 nominations is the Emmy voters rewarding a farewell. That is not a bad thing. When a show ends well and has been as consistently strong as Hacks has, the send-off deserves recognition. But beyond the farewell factor, this cast is extraordinary, and the nominations show it. Industry analysts are currently predicting Jean Smart to win Best Actress in a Comedy Series and Hannah Einbinder for Best Supporting Actress.⁵ Both would be well deserved. Megan Stalter has quickly become someone whose other projects I will seek out because everything she does is entertaining. And finding out that Hannah Einbinder is the daughter of SNL legend Laraine Newman only made me more interested in following her career. The apple does not fall far from the tree. If you have not watched Hacks yet, this is your sign. If you want to know more about why it belongs in the HBO conversation, that piece is already up on Layered. --- **SNL — 11 Nominations for Season 51** My love for Saturday Night Live is officially vindicated. After a historic 50th season, the Season 51 cast earned 11 nominations. The five new cast members this season were Tommy Brennan, Jeremy Culhane, Ben Marshall, Kam Patterson, and Veronika Slowikowska.⁶ For so many new faces in one season, 11 nominations is genuinely impressive and says something about the quality of the year they had. Veronika Slowikowska deserves specific recognition here. She is the first Canadian-born SNL cast member since Norm MacDonald⁷, and she came into the season with a legitimate comedy resume, including a recurring role in What We Do in the Shadows and a role in Tires Season 2\. Andrew Dismukes, Kenan Thompson, [Kam Patterson](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/kill-tony-comics-to-watch/), Michael Che, and plenty of others also deserve credit for what was clearly a strong season. And then there is Kam Patterson getting to attend the Emmys because of it. If you have been following what has been happening with Kam this year, this is just the latest chapter. I wrote about him at length in the [Kill Tony piece](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/kill-tony-comics-to-watch/) — go read that if you want the full picture. I am so jealous I cannot go. --- **Rick and Morty — Outstanding Animated Program** I do not watch much animated television, but I always come back to Rick and Morty when I need a change of pace. This show is a breath of fresh air. The writing, the production, the thought that goes into each season is immaculate, largely due to the creative powerhouses behind it. Even with some controversy surrounding previous creators, they were still able to achieve a nomination for Season 9 for the episode "There's Something About Morty." That speaks to the quality of the work itself regardless of everything else surrounding it. South Park is the frontrunner in this category,⁸ nominated for its long awaited return season. But Rick and Morty earning a nomination at all given the circumstances is a win worth acknowledging. --- **The Shows I Have Not Seen — The Apple TV Problem** All of the shows I have yet to see are on Apple TV. The last streaming service I have yet to get, purely out of fear of falling into a months-long binge session I cannot escape from. But researching these nominations has made that binge session feel increasingly inevitable. **Shrinking** is nominated for multiple categories, including Jason Segel for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. I have been wanting to watch this one for a while. A show with Jason Segel and Harrison Ford does not need to be good to capture an audience because of the star power alone, but from what I have heard, it is genuinely worth the time. **Margo's Got Money Troubles** is the one that genuinely caught me off guard, and the more I have learned about it, the more I understand why. Andrew Santino mentioned this show on a recent episode of Bad Friends, and before that I had not heard anyone talking about it or seen a single ad for it. Now I find out it is created by David E. Kelley, based on a 2024 novel by Rufi Thorpe, and stars Elle Fanning as a college dropout who turns to OnlyFans to support herself and her baby after her married professor disappears when she gets pregnant. Her mother is played by Michelle Pfeiffer as a former Hooters waitress. Her father is Nick Offerman as a former professional wrestler. Nicole Kidman is also in it.⁹ This cast is absurd, and I had no idea. Nick Offerman has emerged as a frontrunner for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.¹⁰ Elle Fanning being nominated for Best Actress is a big surprise as well. She has had quite a career resurgence. This show has been on Apple TV since April 15th and has already been renewed for a second season. Apple TV is clearly willing to greenlight projects involving people who already have a following in some form — this cast speaks for itself. I have clearly been missing out. **Widow's Bay** has 19 nominations and I had genuinely not heard much about it until now. Here is what I know after digging in: it is a comedy horror series created by Katie Dippold and directed by Hiro Murai, starring Matthew Rhys as a skeptical New England mayor trying to turn a cursed island into a tourist destination. It premiered on Apple TV on April 29th, holds a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 102 reviews,¹¹ and has already been renewed for a second season. British actress Kate O'Flynn is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in what is her first Emmy nomination. Matthew Rhys is projected to win Best Actor in a Comedy Series.¹² The mixed genre of comedy and horror is not surprising when you look at what is getting nominated these days — that combination is showing up more and more in the Emmy conversation, and the shows doing it well are standing out. What makes Widow's Bay particularly interesting is the creative team behind it. Hiro Murai directing is a massive signal. He directed Atlanta for Donald Glover, which if you have read the piece on this site you already know is one of the most creatively ambitious shows made in the last decade. When Murai attaches himself to something, it is worth paying attention.¹³ And Bobby Lee mentioned on a recent podcast that creator Katie Dippold got her start writing on MadTV — which tracks completely given her background. She went from MadTV to Parks and Recreation to writing The Heat and Ghostbusters before creating Widow's Bay.¹⁴ This is a show with a strong, experienced creative team behind it that did not need famous names in the lead roles to get the work done. The 98% on Rotten Tomatoes and 19 Emmy nominations prove that. That is not a problem with the show. That is a problem with Apple TV's marketing and honestly with whatever podcasts I have been listening to. --- **A Note on The Studio** The Studio is not eligible this year because Season 2 did not air within the Emmy eligibility window. But it is worth mentioning because context matters. At the 2025 Emmys, The Studio tied The Bear's all-time record with 23 nominations and went on to win multiple awards including Outstanding Comedy Series, Lead Actor, Directing, and Writing for Seth Rogen.¹⁵ If it had been eligible this year, the comedy category would look very different. I have not watched The Studio yet, and I am saving it for when I finally get Apple TV. Knowing it swept the Emmys last year only adds to the anticipation. --- **Other Notable Nominations** The Pitt leads all nominees with 25 nominations. Apple TV's Pluribus follows with 18 nominations in the drama category. Pluribus is Vince Gilligan's critically acclaimed drama starring Rhea Seehorn and is being discussed as a potential contender in the same breath as Succession and White Lotus in terms of scale and ambition.¹⁶ That is a strong endorsement and another Apple TV show I need to get to. Netflix's Beef has 16 nominations. Stranger Things in its final season and Euphoria each have 7. And one worth mentioning specifically for Layered readers — Tires received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama Series for the episode "The Tri-State Mid Market Tire Expo."¹⁷ A technical nomination, but a nomination is a nomination, and for a show that deserves far more recognition than it gets, this one counts. --- **Reality TV Gets Its Due** [Summer House](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/summer-house-will-never-be-the-same/) earned its first-ever Emmy nomination this cycle for Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program, following a scandal-filled and viral 10th season.¹⁸ If you have been reading Layered, you already know how I feel about this season and the editors who made it possible. Go read those pieces for the full breakdown. This nomination is well deserved. What makes this even more interesting is what the nomination has apparently stirred up behind the scenes. The recognition has reportedly created tension, with some Real Housewives stars feeling their crown is slipping after years of watching the franchise dominate Bravo's awards presence.¹⁹ Bravo has pushed back on that characterization, but the fact that it is being discussed at all says everything about how significant Summer House's first nomination actually is. It is also worth noting that after the Scandoval on Vanderpump Rules, that show earned Emmy nominations in 2023 and 2024\. Summer House is following the same pattern — a real-life scandal translating into awards recognition. The Television Academy rewards authentic storytelling, and Bravo keeps delivering it. The other Bravo moment worth noting is Ariana Madix being nominated for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Competition Program for Love Island USA on Peacock. She went from Vanderpump Rules Scandoval to Emmy-nominated host. That is a full-circle moment if I have ever seen one, and it says everything about how quickly things can change in this industry when you handle a difficult situation with grace and keep working. I always thought she got a little too much hype after the whole problem happened, but that's a story for another blog. Top Chef continues its consistent Emmy presence in the Outstanding Reality Competition Program category, as it has since 2007.²⁰ The Traitors is considered the frontrunner in that category,²¹ though Survivor has been campaigning hard. It is hard to see Survivor not winning the category for their 50th season, but anyone who is a fan of The Traitors knows that they consistently get the best of the best from all shows to compete. --- **Honorable Mention: It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia** Year after year, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia gets snubbed at the Emmys. The show has never been nominated in any main Primetime category across 16 seasons and counting — not for series, acting, writing, or directing.²² The only three nominations it has ever received were for Outstanding Stunt Coordination for a Comedy Series, losing to Nickelodeon's Supah Ninjas in 2013 and Brooklyn Nine-Nine in 2014 and 2015.²³ Let that sink in. The gang showed up at the 2023 Emmy ceremony and roasted the Academy for it on live television. Danny DeVito calmly pointed out he had won an Emmy for Taxi. Kaitlin Olson noted that 34 nominations in five years versus zero in 16 years is "bad math."²⁴ There is an entire episode from Season 9 — "The Gang Tries Desperately to Win an Award" — dedicated entirely to this exact feeling. They turned their own snub into comedy, which is the most It's Always Sunny thing they could possibly have done. The most interesting explanation for why it keeps happening comes from author Kimberly Potts, who wrote a behind the scenes book on the show. Her take is that Rob McElhenney simply never understood how the awards game is played.²⁵ The show never campaigned, never worked the room the way Hollywood expects, and paid the price for it. That actually makes the snub feel more like a badge of honor than a slight. It's Always Sunny has always operated outside the system, and the Emmy record reflects that. The show does something no other comedy on television does — it has its finger on the pulse of culture in a way that feels completely its own. But it is not being recognized for high-scale production, a revolving door of famous guest stars, or sweeping life-changing writing that pulls in mainstream viewers. It still feels very much like a passion project, and that is part of what makes it great. The people who love It's Always Sunny really love it. I think it is a stretch to expect the same voters who celebrate Hacks and Widow's Bay to put It's Always Sunny in the same category. You can appreciate both without requiring them to compete on the same terms. Season 17 aired on FX in 2025 and is not eligible in this cycle. But when the new season comes, the nomination they deserve should (but probably won't) come with it. --- No matter your TV genre of choice, this year's Emmy nominations have something worth watching. But 2026 feels like a genuinely pivotal year for comedy — these shows have dominated pop culture conversations all season, and I can't wait to see whether my picks match up with the winners. --- **Sources** 1. Reno 911 flies so under the radar that you can watch it commercial-free on Prime Video right now, which says everything about how little attention it gets relative to how much it deserves. Here is the thing about Reno 911 that does not get said enough. There would be no Abbott Elementary without it. The mockumentary format did not begin and end with The Office. Multiple programs aided the transition to that style of filming, and Reno 911 is one of them. The Office could have been made as a regular sitcom. The comfort that comes from watching it is inseparable from how it is filmed. Reno 911 understood that before most people were paying attention. It works best as a background show, which is its own kind of compliment. The bits are recurring, the characters are consistent, and it rewards the kind of half-attentive watching that most shows cannot survive. If you have run out of things on your usual streamers and have not given Prime a real chance yet, this is a good place to start. --- **The Adam Ray Show — Netflix, new episodes every Friday** ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/08/images--1-.jpeg) Photo by Adam Ray Facebook [The Adam Ray Show](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/adam-ray-netflix-show/) continues to be one of the weekly drops I look forward to most. What has become clear as the season progresses is that Adam is booking guests he is genuinely interested in talking to, not whoever is most relevant at the moment. That distinction matters more than it sounds. The result is a show that feels personal rather than promotional. The standout episode so far was not a celebrity interview. It was his mom. Filmed in his high school auditorium in what felt like a genuinely low-key, personal setting, the episode revealed more about who Adam Ray actually is than anything else the show has done. His mom is as funny as he is, which is not a coincidence. It also became clear in this episode that it was very much just the two of them growing up, and that informs his comedy in ways you can now hear every time he performs. He is wholesome in a way that is increasingly rare in stand-up, and this episode showed exactly where that comes from. Worth watching even if you have not seen any other episodes yet. --- **The Hawk — Netflix** The Hawk had everything going for it. Will Ferrell as lead, a supporting cast that includes Molly Shannon, Fortune Feimster, Luke Wilson, and Chris Parnell, and a premise about a golf legend competing alongside his son that had real emotional potential. And it is fine. Well produced, well cast, and ultimately the kind of Netflix series that you finish and feel good about without feeling the need to tell anyone about it. The cinematography is genuinely interesting. Wide shots and mounted camera angles across real Southern California golf courses give the show a visual language that most sitcom-style productions would not bother with. You can feel the space, which is rare. But the production polish that makes it look great is also part of what keeps it at arm's length. It is too branded, too obviously partnered, too big budget to have the rawness that makes something actually land. There is no realness to it. You never forget you are watching a Netflix show. If you want to see what this cast is capable of in something with more heart and less gloss, watch Tires. That is the comparison The Hawk cannot quite live up to. --- **Next Gen NYC — Bravo** ![Next Gen NYC Promotional Poster](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/08/MV5BYmQ0ZmExMGEtNDZlNC00YmZkLTkwNDYtYzNkNWQwYjc1ZmJkXkEyXkFqcGc@._V1_.jpg) Photo via IMDB [Next Gen NYC](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/bravo-changed-my-mind-on-reality-tv/) is so good, and I think a big part of why is that these are people closer to my age demographic. The chaos level matches the Real Housewives franchises but the stakes feel different when you are watching people navigate the beginning of their adult lives rather than the middle of them. The show has built momentum fast, largely because the cast cannot seem to stay out of trouble, which is both the best and most exhausting thing about it. People like Brooks are hard to support because he stirs the pot in a way that does not move anything forward. It is chaos for the sake of chaos, and after a while that gets old. But then there are people like Hudson, Ariana, Riley, and Brooke Shields' daughter who give the show real substance. These are people you actually want to see succeed. You watch them with a close eye because the opportunities they have been given are real and the ways they could squander them are equally real. That tension is what keeps Next Gen NYC compelling beyond just the drama. This is a franchise worth following. --- **72 Hours and the WWHL Crossover Nobody Saw Coming** ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/08/image.png) The crossover nobody knew they needed finally happened on July 27th. Kevin Hart, Marcello Hernandez, and Kam Patterson stopped by Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen to promote 72 Hours, the new Netflix comedy, and it was exactly as unexpected and wonderful as it sounds. Plenty of comedians have made their way into the Bravo Clubhouse over the years. But Kam Patterson on a show built around Bravo franchises is genuinely surreal if you have been following his trajectory. A year ago the idea would have seemed impossible. Now it just feels like one stop on a press tour that has been everywhere. The best moment came when Andy asked Kam to explain what the movie was about, and he stumbled through it with a complete lack of media training. It was real and unperformed and made him more likeable in thirty seconds than any polished interview could have. That is the thing about Kam. He has not yet been groomed for this level of attention, and it shows in the best possible way. 72 Hours delivered. Original premise, strong cast, a story that appeals across age groups at a time when adaptations and biopics are dominating everything. They even teased a sequel at the end, which means more Kam Patterson, more Marcello Hernandez, and more of what SNL's younger cast members are building outside the show. SNL had a standout year on social media this past season. The younger cast is bringing attention to themselves simply by doing the work they love. [Kam Patterson](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/kill-tony-comics-to-watch/) appearing on WWHL to promote a Netflix movie is just the most visible version of something that has been building for a while. There is something specific that happens when two things you love come together in a way you were not expecting. It adds a layer of engagement that is hard to manufacture. This WWHL episode was that. If you are a Bravo person and a Kill Tony person and you missed it, please do yourself a favor and watch it on Peacock now. ### The Work You Want to Do Is Hard. Do It Anyway. URL: https://www.layeredentertainment.com/the-work-you-want-to-do-is-hard/ Last updated: 2026-08-10T13:56:55.000Z Everyone is trying to make something right now. A podcast, a blog, a YouTube channel, a personal brand built on nothing but a ring light and a point of view. The market is so oversaturated that making even a slight impact can feel impossible, and yet more people are jumping in every single day. So the question worth asking is not whether it is too crowded. It is why anyone bothers at all. The honest answer is that most people are doing the easiest version of the thing. Promoting a product. Reposting someone else's take. Optimizing for the algorithm before they have figured out what they actually want to say. That is not building something. That is performing the idea of building something, which is a different thing entirely and most people cannot tell the difference until it is too late. The only real differentiator left is authenticity. Being so specifically yourself that nobody else could replicate it even if they tried. That sounds obvious until you attempt it in public, with an audience, while being constantly influenced by everyone else doing the same thing. Social media has compounded that effect to a degree that makes true originality feel almost impossible. Everyone is expressing themselves constantly and almost none of it is original. The pressure to stand out has made everyone look the same. --- **What Gets Lost When the Hard Parts Get Outsourced** AI has made this worse in a specific way that does not get discussed enough. Everyone is using it, including the people writing about how bad it is to use it. The problem is not the tool. The problem is what happens when you use it to skip the parts of the creative process that are supposed to be hard. The struggle of finding the right word, sitting with an idea until it becomes something real, organizing a thought that starts as a feeling and ends as an argument — that process is where the writing actually becomes yours. When you outsource it, you get something that sounds like writing without quite being it. Clean, organized, competent, and somehow hollow. The more you lean on it the harder it becomes to hear your own voice underneath it. And the voice is the whole thing. Without it you are just producing content, which the world has plenty of already. Of course there are legitimate uses. Research, fact-checking, organization, a first pass at structure. But the difficult parts, the parts that make you sit with discomfort until something true comes out, those cannot be outsourced without cost. Better storytelling comes from doing the hard work. There is no shortcut that does not show. --- **Being Adjacent to the Thing You Want** There is a specific kind of frustration that comes from being close to the thing you actually want without being in it. Of course working with Allison Jones on casting or being Mindy Kaling's personal assistant would be more glamorous than most entry points into this industry. But most people do not start there. They start somewhere adjacent, learning the shape of the thing from the outside, picking up enough to know what they are looking at even when they are not in the room. Working in broadcast TV sales is not glamorous. Sitting in on discussions about pulling Jimmy Kimmel Live from Sinclair's 38 ABC affiliates after the Charlie Kirk controversy, watching a single network decision affect twenty-five percent of the country's late night viewing, that is interesting. Understanding why Nielsen ratings still run the show even as streaming takes over, watching local broadcast and streaming collide in real time from a desk that technically belongs to neither world, that is useful even when it does not feel like it. The exit does not mean the education was wasted. And then there is the eye that develops from paying close enough attention for long enough. The Hawk, Will Ferrell's new Netflix comedy, uses wide shots and mounted camera angles across real Southern California golf courses that most sitcom-style productions would never bother with. It makes the space feel real because it is. Most viewers feel the difference without being able to name it. Knowing why something works is not the same as being in the room where it was decided. But it is not nothing either. --- **Keep Pushing. Find Another Way.** The market is oversaturated. The tools are democratized. Everyone has a platform and most of them are saying the same things in slightly different fonts. None of that is a reason not to try. It is just the condition of trying right now, in this moment, when the barrier to entry is low enough that everyone is in the pool. What cuts through is not better equipment or a bigger following or a more optimized posting schedule. It is the specific, irreplaceable thing that only comes from doing the work the hard way, being patient enough to let it become something real, and being stubborn enough to keep going when it does not feel like it is working yet. The work worth doing is always harder than expected. That has always been true. The only answer, now as much as ever, is to keep pushing and find another way when the first one does not work. ### Get Your Tickets to JokeWrld Fest Now URL: https://www.layeredentertainment.com/jokewrld-fest-2026/ Last updated: 2026-08-08T18:50:51.000Z Every few years something comes along in comedy that feels genuinely new. Not new as in never been done, but new as in this is the right thing at the right time built by the right people. JokeWrld Fest is that thing, and it is happening August 14 and 15 in St. Petersburg, Florida, and if you are serious about stand-up you should already be paying attention. JokeWrld is not hard to come by if you are into comedy these days. The account posts the same comedy news worth knowing, covers the comics worth following, and has managed to land some genuinely big names for interviews. By the time they announced the festival, it was already obvious this was not going to be another fly-by-night event. This is a brand that has been doing the work online long enough to know what its audience actually wants. The festival is the next logical step. --- **Where It Sits in the Landscape** [Netflix is a Joke Fest](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/netflix-is-a-joke-fest/). South by Southwest. The National Comedy Festival. Skankfest. There are more comedy festivals across the country than most people realize, and it is genuinely hard to know which ones are legitimate and which are still trying to figure out what they are. That is not a problem JokeWrld has. The audience is already established. This is just giving people another way to experience what they have been consuming online, except the way it is actually supposed to be experienced. This is the first year, which makes it grassroots by definition, and that is exciting in a way that a more established festival cannot replicate. Getting in on the ground floor of something that has this much potential is rare. Florida is also a smarter choice than it might seem on the surface. There are comedy festivals large and small scattered across the country, but not nearly as many in Florida as the audience size there warrants. Build it, and they will come. Comedy audiences exist everywhere. The industry just does not always act like it. --- **What JokeWrld Is Actually Doing Right** Stand-up is not the same when you watch it on your phone or your television. Anyone who has been in a room when a set is clicking knows this. There is something that happens between a comedian and a live audience that no recording can fully capture, and the more comedy moves to podcasts and YouTube and social media clips, the more important it becomes for someone to keep pointing people back toward the live experience. That is what JokeWrld is doing, and it matters. The festival includes stand-up shows, live podcasts, and other programming spread across Coastal Creative and various venues throughout downtown St. Petersburg. It is a full two days, not just a single show dressed up as a festival. Among the performers are Joe DeRosa, Jeremiah Watkins, Jessie Jetski Johnson, Greg Fitzsimmons, and Casey Rocket, who has been one of the more exciting names coming out of the Kill Tony universe this year. If you have not read the full breakdown on [Casey](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/kill-tony-comics-to-watch/) and the other comics worth watching right now, that piece is worth your time. It does not feel like a money grab. It feels like a genuine attempt to bring more comedy to people the way it is meant to be brought, by someone who clearly loves it. --- **Why I Am Going** I am volunteering at JokeWrld Fest. Working for free, which tells you everything about where my head is at when it comes to comedy. The chance to be in that environment, to brush shoulders with comics in a way that puts us in the same room even if not on the same level, to feel like more than just another face in the crowd, that is worth more than whatever a weekend would otherwise cost. There are a handful of comics I am genuinely excited to see for the first time and to have the chance to actually think about the sets afterward rather than just watching them from the couch. That is the whole point. Being there in person changes what you take away from it. If you are in or near Florida next weekend and you are serious about comedy, this is the event to be at. And if JokeWrld does what it looks like it is going to do with this first year, get familiar with the name now. This is the ground floor. Get your tickets [here](https://www.jokewrldfest.com/?ref=layeredentertainment.com) ### Kill Tony Is Creating Stars. Here Are the Ones to Watch. URL: https://www.layeredentertainment.com/kill-tony-comics-to-watch/ Last updated: 2026-08-05T13:45:01.000Z Dedrick Flynn signed up for Kill Tony 58 times before he was finally pulled. 58 times. That is the story of what this show actually does for a comic if you are paying attention to the right people. Most people tune in for Tony and the house band and the headliners. But the real reason to be watching closely right now is what is coming up from the bucket. Kill Tony has been running since 2013 and the pipeline of talent it has produced is only getting harder to ignore. If you do well on that show, it can change the entire trajectory of your career. There are people who were performing stand-up as a hobby before they got pulled, and are now doing it full time because of what happened in that one minute. That is not a small thing. That is the whole thing. --- **The Joe Rogan Question** Kill Tony would still be around and still be good without the Comedy Mothership. The show's identity does not come from the venue. Moving to Austin and doing it at Rogan's club did not give Kill Tony a new identity so much as it brought them closer to more like-minded people. The negative buzz that surrounds the show now is largely a product of that association. They hooked their wagon to Joe Rogan, and whatever becomes of him will have some bearing on Tony. That may be wrong. We will see. But it is a real consideration for a show that could otherwise stand entirely on its own merits. --- **A Note on Kill Tony From a Female Perspective** It can sometimes be hard to support the comics featured on Kill Tony as a woman. There are too many who come on thinking they have found the perfect audience for unfunny, sexist, racist, and transphobic jokes. That culture is promoted enough by Tony and Brian Redban that most women would find it hard to sit through. I do not typically like to draw lines between male and female comics, but it is hard not to here when so few women are getting recognized on the show. A lot of women are doing stand-up right now. I can name just as many women as men. But not on Kill Tony. To be fair, I am not sure I would want to sit around in a sketchy bar with a drunk crowd either. And the women who do get up there are immediately scrutinized more heavily than the men around them, which makes it harder to support the ones who are genuinely good. Fiona Cauley and Yara are the clearest examples of what it looks like when a woman gets up there and earns it on her own terms. There is a version of Kill Tony that celebrates that more. It just does not always feel like the version we are getting. --- **The Ones to Watch** Dedrick Flynn is the Dark Storm of Atlanta turned Dark Storm of Texas, and one of my favorites to ever cross that stage. He is authentic, and when he is nervous it shows. But I like that. There is no false confidence. He just shows up as himself every single time, constantly working on new material, putting out as much as he can on social media. He is dedicated to his comedy in a way you can feel through the screen. After 58 signups and years of grinding on the stand-up scene before that, his first episode said everything about what this show can do when the right person finally gets pulled. He will be a very reliable booking for years to come. Casey Rocket had been doing stand-up for quite some time before Kill Tony found him. He was a regular for a while and has been MIA for over a year, which makes his appearance in KillTonyMania on Netflix alongside Dedrick Flynn, William Montgomery, and Jeff Ross even more of a moment. He owns the stage in a way that is immediate. Part of his act is literally shuffling across the whole space, making use of every inch of it. He brings more to stand-up than just stand-up, and that kind of range has potential across a lot of different platforms and styles. Casey Rocket will be performing at JokeWorld Fest in St. Petersburg, Florida on August 14 and 15, 2026, alongside many others from the Kill Tony universe. If you have been watching the show and want to see what these comics look like in a full live setting, this is the event to be at. Fiona Cauley is one of the few women making real noise in the Kill Tony universe, and she deserves every bit of the attention coming her way. Yara is small, quiet, and looks like she could not possibly be about to say what she is about to say. That is her whole power. She has not had the sensationalism that surrounds other Kill Tony breakouts, but I think she is building something stronger for it. She is focused on the comedy and not the Kill Tony universe energy, and Tony said it best when he said she will no doubt be doing this for the rest of her life. I believe it. Timmy No Brakes is doing something completely different than everyone else, to an exhausting degree at times. He takes the Timmy No Brakes persona so seriously that he likely feels stuck without it. At the Killers of Kill Tony tour in May, he did an impression of a normal white guy instead of being himself, which was genuinely interesting. He is always bending the line between stand-up and improv in a way that casual viewers would not recognize as such. His bits are memorable in a way that a lot of Kill Tony regulars are not. David Lucas was already making a name for himself before Kill Tony, and does not always get recognized for the work done before the show found him. He was a writer on the Kevin Hart Roast, which is a significant credit when you consider that roast writing is exactly where Tony got his own start. Lucas is funny, he has a podcast, a family, a life he was already building. He tours regularly with the Killers of Kill Tony. He will have a long career in Hollywood whether it comes from the Kill Tony fanship or not. --- **The Biggest Success Story: Kam Patterson** [Kam Patterson ](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/404/)is the perfect example of what Kill Tony can do for a comic today. He had only been doing stand-up for about four years when he was discovered on the show. He got SNL at 26\. He landed more screen time in his first season than multiple featured players combined. He is in 72 Hours, the Kevin Hart Netflix comedy dropping July 24, and the press around him has been building for months and is not slowing down. When I heard Kam got SNL, I was freaking out. SNL is where my love of comedy started, so it carries a specific weight for me that most Kill Tony fans who have probably never watched it would not feel the same way. I also understand what it means in the history of television to land that show. It is not just a job. It is a credential that opens every door that comes after it. I think Kam Patterson, more than Tony himself, is the reason Kill Tony is getting the industry recognition it is right now. Everyone knows the show promotes a lot of low-brow comedy. But it is also providing comics with a platform they could not get anywhere else, and the tradeoff is one people seem willing to make when it produces talent like Kam. He is different. He is a star right now in a way that not everyone who comes through Kill Tony will be. Kill Tony may have given him his platform, but his success from here on is entirely his own. That is the whole point of watching closely. You never know who gets pulled next. ### Bad Friends Game Show: This Is How You Build Something URL: https://www.layeredentertainment.com/bad-friends-game-show-this-is-how-you-build-something/ Last updated: 2026-07-24T16:00:18.000Z If you read my piece on Netflix is a Joke Fest, you already know how I feel about Bobby Lee and Andrew Santino live. The Bad Game Show is the natural next chapter of what they are building, and five episodes in, it is clear they had no intention of waiting for anyone to give them permission to make it. The show was created by Andrew Santino and Nick Kreiss, the same Nick Kreiss who worked on Punk'd and The Eric André Show. The showrunner is Ray Schmieg, also from The Eric André Show and Ziwe. These are not amateurs figuring it out as they go. This is a team that knows exactly what they are doing, choosing to do it outside of a network on purpose. Ten episodes, filmed in Bobby's mom's actual basement, distributed through YouTube and Spotify Video every Wednesday at 9am PST. Revenue comes from brand partnerships, not a network deal. No one is telling them what to do, who to book, or how long the games should last. The format barely exists. The points do not really matter. The rules are, in their own words, loosey goosey. And somehow that is exactly the point. --- **The Guests Are the Show** Five episodes in and the guest combinations alone are worth talking about. Episode one had Bert Kreischer versus Eric Andre, which set the tone immediately — chaotic, unpredictable, and exactly what you would expect from those two in a room together. Episode two brought Ralph Barbosa and Felipe Esparza in to order pizza, which sounds simple and somehow became its own thing entirely. The most unexpected pairing so far has been episode three, Gene Simmons versus Oliver Tree. I would love to know the backstory on how Gene Simmons got booked on this show, because he looked like he had absolutely no idea what he was in for. Oliver Tree showed up dressed as Gene Simmons in full KISS makeup, which was either the most prepared or most unhinged thing a guest has ever done on the show depending on how you look at it. Everyone was unprepared. For someone in music, getting paired with Gene Simmons is probably a big deal. The fact that Oliver carried himself so comfortably and openly throughout the whole episode made it even more interesting to watch. He was naturally funny, brought something unique to every situation, and left you wanting more of him in every frame. Bobby and Andrew went back and edited in a short tribute to Oliver at the beginning of the episode after his passing, explaining the backstory behind what he was wearing. It was a small thing that said everything about how they felt about him. Oliver Tree was a joy to watch, and getting to see him one more time, even posthumously, was something worth being grateful for. Episode four with Robby Hoffman, who most people know from Hacks, brought a banter energy that made the whole thing feel genuinely fun rather than just chaotic. Episode five turned up the temperature with Yung Gravy and his girlfriend Ari Kytsya, featuring games that absolutely went off the rails in the best possible way. Five episodes in and no two have felt the same, which is the whole point. This is also a genuinely great show to watch with other people. If you are already a fan of Bobby and Andrew, watching this with friends who know the Bad Friends universe adds a whole other layer to it. The chaos lands differently when everyone in the room is already invested in the hosts. --- **What the Show Is Actually About** The games are not really the point. They all involve blindfolds or finding something around the room and none of them have stood out as particularly inventive yet. But that is not a criticism so much as an observation about what the show actually is. It is not a game show in the traditional sense. It is a vehicle for authentic, unscripted interactions between people who would otherwise never be in the same room together. Bobby and Andrew are surprisingly matched in energy here, which is different from how they operate on Bad Friends where their distinct voices create the dynamic. On The Bad Game Show they are both running at the same high-energy, ultra-positive frequency and their chemistry holds up regardless. They are not performing for cameras the way they would on network television. They are just being themselves while loosely attempting to facilitate very small games in a basement. The production quality is exactly what you would expect from podcast professionals who know that good video and clean audio are non-negotiable, and everything else can sort itself out. That is the whole argument for what they are building. You do not need a network. You do not need a traditional format. You do not need financing and distribution in the old sense of the word. You need a good idea, the right people, and the willingness to make the thing. Bobby and Andrew built an audience through Bad Friends for years, and now they are using that audience as the foundation for something new. The show goes straight to YouTube and Spotify. The money comes from brand partnerships. No one is in the way. If you want to make something, make it. Build it and they will come, if it is worth seeing. The Bad Game Show is worth seeing. Watch it every Wednesday at 9am PST on the Bad Friends YouTube channel and Spotify Video. ### Comedies Are So Back, and I Will Not Apologize for Using That Phrase URL: https://www.layeredentertainment.com/comedies-are-so-back-2026/ Last updated: 2026-07-20T23:41:07.000Z It is safe to laugh again. Over the last decade, comedies all but disappeared from cinemas. The ones that made it to streaming were not exactly keeping anyone in hysterics either. But 2026 has quietly become something of a rebound year for the genre, and it has happened across every format at once — theatrical, streaming, independent, studio. Time Out put it simply earlier this year: 2026 is looking like a real rebound for both big and small screen comedies. They are right. The argument is not that comedies never went anywhere. It is that people stopped making them the right way. Too much CGI, too many IP tie-ins, too much money chasing too little originality. What is working right now is simpler than that. Real premises, real chemistry, real jokes. The kind of comedy you used to be able to rely on and then could not find for years. --- **Little Brother — Netflix** Little Brother is exactly what a studio comedy should be. John Cena and Eric André as an unlikely pair is a premise that sells itself, and the film delivers on it. Cena plays Rudd, a semi-famous real estate agent whose carefully constructed life is upended when Marcus, his eccentric former Big Brothers Big Sisters mentee played by Eric André, reappears out of nowhere. Christopher Meloni plays Rudd's billionaire older brother who has spent a lifetime one-upping him without breaking a sweat, and Penélope Cruz rounds out the cast as Rudd's wife navigating the chaos from the middle. What makes it work is that it is a genuinely new storyline. The buddy comedy format has been done to death but this specific dynamic has not. André brings every bit of the outrageous unhinged energy you expect from him, and Cena more than holds his own as the straight man absorbing it. It is the kind of movie you watch on a Friday night and feel good about afterward. Available now on Netflix. --- **Bus Boys — Apple TV and Prime Video** [Bus Boys](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/the-deep-dive-july-14-2026/) is the throwback nobody knew they needed. Theo Von and David Spade lead a buddy comedy packed with standups, high production quality, and an actual story that does not rely on unrealistic premises or overproduced set pieces. It looks and feels like a real movie, which sounds like a low bar but is genuinely rare for a self-funded comedy. Theo could learn a thing or two from David Spade when it comes to delivering a grounded performance, but the two of them together work in a way you would not predict. Small note: the title is a little misleading. They spend the whole movie trying to become waiters, not bus boys. Small complaint for a movie that is genuinely fun to watch. The fact that you have to intentionally seek it out and rent it on Apple TV or Prime Video is part of the experience. Worth every dollar. --- **The Invite — In Theaters** The Invite has been generating serious buzz and deserves every bit of it, even if you have not heard about it yet. That is actually part of the story. Olivia Wilde directed and starred in this dinner party comedy alongside Seth Rogen, Edward Norton, and Penélope Cruz. Two couples. One increasingly chaotic evening. The kind of premise that lives or dies by the cast and the writing, and this one has both. Wilde filmed the entire thing in 21 days on a soundstage, which either sounds insane or like the most focused creative decision a director could make. It premiered at Sundance in January and A24 won a competitive bidding war to distribute it. It has since earned a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, an 88% audience score, and one of the best per screen averages of the year when it opened on just seven screens in New York and Los Angeles. It has now expanded nationwide and crossed $10 million worldwide. The reason you may not have heard about it is probably just how A24 releases films — limited screens first, word of mouth second, wide release when the buzz builds on its own. There is less noise around The Invite than a studio film would generate with the same cast. That might actually be the point. Some of the best comedies this year are the ones you have to find yourself. This is one of them. --- **Harland Williams —** [**Wingman**](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/harland-williams-bet-on-himself-and-won/) **— Apple TV and Prime Video** If you need one more reason to believe comedies are back, Harland Williams wrote, directed, and starred in his own independent film and put it on Apple TV and Prime Video without waiting for anyone's permission or financing. That is the energy of 2026 comedy in one sentence. We already covered Wingman in full over on Layered — check that out for the complete breakdown. The short version: it is funny, it is real, and it is proof that you do not need a studio to make something worth watching. --- The genre that was supposedly on life support is having a quietly excellent year. You just have to know where to look. ### The Deep Dive — July 14, 2026 URL: https://www.layeredentertainment.com/the-deep-dive-july-14-2026/ Last updated: 2026-07-14T23:33:26.000Z **The Bear — Season 5 (FX on Hulu)** The end is finally here. After countless takes on whether Season 5 did or did not miss the mark, Christopher Storer wrapped The Bear in a way that was surprisingly delicate for a show that spent five seasons making you feel like you were having a panic attack in a professional kitchen. They could have closed the restaurant down and let everyone go their separate ways. Instead, they gave the audience what it actually needed. Resolution. Comfort. The kind of ending that respects how much people invested in these characters. There has long been debate about whether The Bear is a comedy or a drama, and the Emmy voters have gone back and forth on it, but an ending that lands this gently reads as comedy every time. The Bear has already won multiple Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy Series, and the conversation around where this final season lands in that legacy is just getting started. However you feel about how it ended, the writing held. Storer earned it. --- **The Adam Ray Show (Netflix — new episodes every Friday)** I have been looking forward to the weekly drops of [The Adam Ray Show](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/adam-ray-netflix-show/) more than almost anything else dropping right now. There is something about a weekly release that changes how you consume something, and Adam Ray has figured out how to make that work in his favor. What is surprising is how much it feels like a television show rather than a podcast. The guests are not the usual podcast circuit names. All four Impractical Jokers at once, Hasan Minhaj, and his own mom. It is wholesome content in the best possible way. The Rochester shoutout from Hasan Minhaj did not hurt either. The one observation worth making is that the format does not fully show what Adam Ray is actually capable of. Anyone who has seen him live or watched his characters in action knows there is so much more range there. As it stands, he comes across as a really funny interviewer, which is nothing, but it is also what a lot of people are doing on Netflix right now. A variety of elements would have allowed him to show the full picture of what he is capable of. That said, the show is finding its audience week by week, and that momentum is exactly what he has been building toward for twenty years. Worth watching. --- **Real Housewives of Rhode Island — Season 1 Reunion** [Rhode Island](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/bravo-changed-my-mind-on-reality-tv/) had a killer first season, and the reunion delivered in a way that even the most established franchises rarely do on their first try. A two-part reunion for a debut season is almost unheard of on Bravo, and they earned every minute of it. Alicia is a star. Her accent alone is worth the watch, but she is genuinely interesting, not just another personality that fades into the background by episode three. She deserves every bit of the attention coming her way. Ashley brought her previous TV history to the table and not much else, and it will be interesting to see how she factors in going forward without a stronger storyline to carry. Rosie and the other half of that friend group blur together for me at times, but slampig is permanently in my vocabulary, and I will not be apologizing for that. If Dave Portnoy is tuning into a Housewives franchise, it is probably worth paying attention to. As for Rulla, the fact that she is staying with her husband after everything that has been said and speculated publicly is baffling. True or not, that much noise around a rumor should be enough to make someone reconsider their choices, if not their nose. Liz McGraw announcing her exit right after the reunion aired was the real gut punch. She was a fan favorite and clearly central to the show's DNA through her connection to Dolores Catania. Her statement was gracious, but the timing was pointed. There has also been significant chatter around her longtime friend Dino Guilmette, who is currently facing eight drug-related charges in Rhode Island, and while Liz has not been named in connection with the case in any way, it is hard not to wonder if stepping back from the spotlight is connected. Andy Cohen dropped a heart in the comments and said the door is always open. The door being open is nice. The reunion being this good without needing her to carry it is even better for the franchise long term. --- **Bus Boys (Available to rent on Apple TV and Prime Video)** Bus Boys is the throwback comedy 2026 needed. Theo Von and David Spade lead a buddy comedy that is packed with stand-ups, high production quality, and an actual story that does not rely on unrealistic premises or overproduced set pieces. It looks and feels like a real movie, which sounds like a low bar but is genuinely rare for a self-funded comedy these days. Theo could learn a thing or two from David Spade when it comes to delivering a realistic performance, but the two of them together work in a way you would not necessarily predict. One note: the title is a little misleading. They spend the whole movie trying to become waiters, not busboys. Small complaint for a movie that is genuinely fun to watch and intentional in a way that a lot of studio comedies stopped being years ago. You have to seek it out, rent it on Apple TV or Prime Video, and that intentionality is part of the experience. Worth the few dollars. ### Bravo Changed My Mind on Reality TV and I Am Not Embarrassed About It URL: https://www.layeredentertainment.com/bravo-changed-my-mind-on-reality-tv/ Last updated: 2026-06-30T19:11:11.000Z I will be the first to admit it. I did not get the appeal of reality TV for years. The Kardashians never did it for me. TLC shows, love-themed shows, none of it. I never found the one I could actually relate to, which is sort of the whole point of REALity TV. I watched people lose their minds over franchises I could not get into and genuinely did not understand what they were seeing that I was not. Then I found Bravo. And I get it now. Bravo figured out something that most reality TV never did. People do not just want drama. They want drama that feels real. There are constant arguments about how real reality TV actually is, and after watching as much Bravo as I have, I can tell you there is no producing going on in the traditional sense. The storylines are already there. The cameras just propel them forward. Bravo films real relationships and lets the story follow. Other reality TV manufactures situations and forces people together to see what happens. That difference is everything. One feels authentic because it is. One feels staged because it is. The result is a show that gives you a more realistic, whole look at other people's lives, interactions, emotions, and relationships than anything else in the reality TV space. Once you find that you cannot go back to anything less. It also makes smart business sense. Reality TV is significantly cheaper to produce than scripted series, and Bravo has turned that into a model that generates enormous advertising revenue, social media engagement, and a built in audience that keeps coming back season after season. That is why NBCUniversal keeps expanding the franchise rather than replacing it. Why fix what is not broken. Peacock has become the home for extended cuts, early access episodes, and exclusive content that keeps the most dedicated viewers paying for more. The business and the audience are perfectly aligned, and that does not happen by accident. 9 out of 10 times I want to make conversation with another woman, I open with whether she watches Bravo. It works almost every time. Most people who watch Bravo REALLY watch [Bravo](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/summer-house-will-never-be-the-same/). The audience is not casual. These are people who follow cast members on social media, listen to the podcasts, watch the reunions twice, and have very strong opinions about people they have never met. It is a community as much as it is a television show. One of the most interesting things about Bravo once you start paying attention is how connected everyone is. These women do not just show up out of nowhere. They are linked to the right people, in the right circles, long before they ever get an audition. Each franchise has its own unique culture and style, its own set of dynamics and recurring tensions, and yet they all exist under the same umbrella in a way that feels intentional. It is cool to watch once you see it. Orange County started it all. New Jersey and Atlanta have always been strong. Beverly Hills is next-level luxury that people love to watch. Salt Lake City has such a strong voice it feels like its own universe entirely. Southern Charm and Summer House bring a younger, edgier energy that leans into physical cues on screen, screenshots, timeline updates, and flashbacks that tie the story together in a more complete way than Bravo shows did years ago. Atlanta does the same. The list goes on and on. And then there is Miami. I am genuinely shocked it is back on pause again. It is typically one of my favorite franchises to watch, but with so many others, it can get lost in the mix. The issue is the cast. Miami's cast does not feel as connected to the same VIP circles as the others, and that changes the whole dynamic. The access and the connections are part of what makes these shows feel aspirational. Without that it is harder to stay invested. If I had to show someone who had never watched Bravo a reason to start, I would make them watch Theresa Giudice the moment she realized the cameras caught what she did last season of New Jersey. I would show them the timestamps, screenshots, receipts moment from Salt Lake City. I would put Kenya Moore in front of them and let Atlanta do the rest. And I would force them to watch Rhode Island for the personalities and accents alone. There is something for everyone, and once you find your entry point there is no going back. What keeps me coming back more than anything is seeing how other people live. And I think that is true for most women who watch Bravo, even if they would not say it that way. There are things that are lacking in our own lives, and Bravo fills some of that in. Whether it is luxury clothing, nice dinners, rich people problems, or just watching someone navigate a situation you would never find yourself in, reality TV gives you a way to step out of your own life for a bit and into someone else's. Because while it is real, it does not seem possible that people are living such completely different lives from mine as I watch them from my couch. That contrast is exactly what makes it so addictive. It works the same way with Below Deck. You are not watching wealthy women this time; you are watching people work on a yacht for wealthy people. But you are still being transported into a completely different life. Living on a boat, navigating charter season, serving people who have more money than you will ever see. It is still about seeing how other people live and how that contrasts with your daily routine. Below Deck is not my favorite group of shows on Bravo, but it has some of my favorite cast members. Aesha is the only reason I have watched as much as I have. She is one of the most positive people I have ever seen on reality television. I have never seen her do something I did not like. She puts me in a good mood every single time she is on screen, and she is genuinely that way. You do not see that on reality TV very often. It is usually the drama that keeps you watching. With Aesha it is the opposite. Bravo gives its cast enough time to become real people to you. By season three of any franchise, you have opinions. You have favorites. You have people you cannot stand and cannot fully explain why. That familiarity is what other reality shows are missing. They reset too quickly ever to build the kind of investment that makes Bravo what it is. I have been watching for a few years now, and I am still finding shows I have not gotten to yet. That is a good problem to have. ### Quality vs Quantity: HBO and Netflix Are Not Playing the Same Game URL: https://www.layeredentertainment.com/hbo-vs-netflix-quality-vs-quantity/ Last updated: 2026-06-25T22:02:08.000Z There is a specific feeling that comes with opening Netflix after a long day. You scroll for twenty minutes, nothing feels right, and you end up rewatching something you have already seen. The options are endless, and somehow that makes it worse. That contrast tells you everything you need to know about the difference between these two platforms. And it has nothing to do with price or library size or how many originals either one produces in a year. It is about philosophy. Netflix and HBO are not playing the same game, and the sooner you realize that, the better you will watch. --- **The Philosophy Is Different, and It Shows** People go to HBO when they have an idea they want to run with. They go to Netflix when they care about the money or the marketing. Those are not the same thing, and the content reflects it. From Curb Your Enthusiasm to Girls to Succession, there are so many quality shows on HBO that have stood the test of time. People still talk about The Wire and The Sopranos for a reason. HBO really was and still is putting out content that cannot be matched by other networks. No amount of money can replace creative talent, and Netflix has proven that repeatedly by throwing budgets at projects that land with a thud. It is also nearly impossible to find anything on Netflix without a direct search. Their homepage is a scroll optimized to grab your attention in the next thirty seconds. HBO is different. Carefully curated. I regularly see the same titles on the homepage, and I appreciate that it is niche. Nobody can compete with Netflix on scale, so everyone else needs to offer something Netflix cannot. A specific, intentional content list. Quality over quantity. I just hope that it benefits early filmmakers in the process. Netflix keeps increasing its price and pushing ad-supported tiers to justify its subscriber numbers. That tells you everything you need to know. If the content were carrying the platform on its own, they would not need to keep finding new revenue streams. They are producing a ton of different kinds of content, but all within a limited scope and structure, without the deep writing or thinking that makes something last. Quantity over quality is not winning, even if the subscriber numbers make it look like it is. When I tried to think of Netflix originals to include here as counterexamples, ones that genuinely challenged my argument, I had a harder time than I expected. That says something. --- **What HBO Does With a Creator Nobody Has Heard Of: White Lotus** White Lotus is one of the best shows on TV/streaming right now. It is also the perfect example of what HBO does that Netflix simply does not. Mike White's previous work is nothing close to what White Lotus is. The gap between what he had made before and what this show became says something about what is possible when someone is given the right platform and genuine creative freedom. HBO gave him that. Nobody else would have. What a work of art. It is such a deep analysis of the most uncomfortable human emotions. Some scenes are genuinely hard to get through, but you want to keep watching to see what decisions the characters will make. I have watched very few shows that have laid out storylines so clearly yet kept such a big mystery going for so long. You really have no idea who died until the very end. Here is the thing, though. Once you know how it ends, every choice becomes obvious. 9 out of 10 times, the character does exactly what you would expect a person in their situation to do. The mystery of White Lotus is not about surprising you. It is about making you watch people arrive at the inevitable. The show lays out its characters so clearly from the beginning that the ending feels both shocking and completely earned at the same time. What sticks with me most is how it handles wealth. Every season, you watch characters who have every resource available to them make the same mistakes as everyone else. Letting social anxiety win, choosing comfort over honesty, and going back to normal the moment the pressure lifts. The way their struggles are portrayed is not sympathetic or satirical. It is just realistic. And that realism is what makes it impossible to look away. HBO made White Lotus because they trusted a creator with a vision even before that vision had proven itself. That is the whole argument right there. --- **What Netflix Does With a Creator Everyone Already Knows: Tom Segura and Bad Thoughts** Tom Segura talked about this recently on Your Mom's House, right around when Bad Thoughts Season 2 dropped on Netflix at the end of May. He said he was happy he went to Netflix. Netflix gave him the creative freedom to make what he wanted. I do not doubt that. But I want to push back a little. Segura is at a level where he can essentially make whatever he wants and find the backing to do it. He is not a first-time creator navigating the industry. Netflix did not take a chance on an unknown when they signed Bad Thoughts. They signed one of the most recognizable names in stand-up with a built-in audience in the millions. The creative freedom he experienced is not the same creative freedom a smaller creator would walk in with. From episode count to run time to marketing to how the show gets positioned on the platform, those decisions do not belong to the creator. They belong to Netflix. I keep thinking about American High out of Syracuse and their show Minimum Wage coming to Netflix Their cast shot the original sketches on their phones. They wrote the show themselves. Netflix is giving them 28 episodes (surprisingly). That sounds like freedom. But American High already had 30 million views across social media before Netflix came calling. The barrier for entry was already cleared. I am not sure the result looks the same for a small studio with a great idea and no existing audience. Bad Thoughts was great. Season 2 was really enjoyable. But would I have enjoyed it as much if I did not know anyone in it? Honestly, probably not. I would not have even found it. The same goes for [Adam Ray](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/adam-ray-netflix-show/)'s new podcast. Without a headline name and a marketing push leading up to the premiere, it is just another title lost in the Netflix scroll. The familiarity is part of the experience. That is not a criticism of the show. It is a criticism of the platform and what it requires to succeed there. --- **The Show Netflix Would Never Make: Hacks** If you want to understand the difference between HBO and Netflix in one example, watch Hacks. Hacks is too woke in the best possible writing way. Too creative. The storytelling is too in-depth, too critical, too focused on the writing itself over everything else. It hits emotionally in a way I haven't connected with a show on Netflix in a long time, and it is a comedy. HBO has more thoughtful writers with strong experience who know how to propel ideas forward with the right creative vision behind them. Netflix needs the marketing strategy to exist before the show does. HBO lets the show be the strategy. Hacks would never get a Netflix deal because it does not fit within the limited scope Netflix operates in. It requires patience from an audience, trust in the writing, and a willingness to sit with uncomfortable things. Those are not qualities Netflix optimizes for. That is the difference. Netflix needs you to already have an audience. HBO builds one for you. Whether that model is sustainable as streaming continues to evolve is a whole other conversation. But right now, it is producing better television. And the numbers do not change that. Quality over quantity is not just a preference. It is the only argument that holds up over time. ### Famesick by Lena Dunham Made Me Feel Very Seen and Slightly Nervous URL: https://www.layeredentertainment.com/lena-dunham-famesick-review/ Last updated: 2026-07-22T22:20:56.000Z **Famesick by Lena Dunham Made Me Feel Very Seen and Slightly Nervous** I would probably not get along with Lena Dunham in real life. We are too similar. Neurotic, ambitious, overthinking everything, caring too much about what things mean and whether the work is good enough. I say that with complete admiration. She is a strong minded person with a drive and ambition that intimidates those around her, especially younger women who want to have as much success as she does. I think that is a good thing. I feel that way about a lot of inspirational people. The ones who make you a little nervous are usually the ones worth paying attention to. Famesick pulled me in from page one. She is a true wordsmith. A national treasure, honestly. She has a long career ahead in writing, and hopefully in television too, because Girls was one of the most important shows of the last twenty years and I think people are only now starting to give it the credit it deserves. What made me feel most seen was how she talked about creating Girls and how unsure she was throughout the whole process. You think of these young people in Hollywood as rockstars. You assume they know exactly what they are doing and that everything comes easily to them. But they are just as clueless as the rest of us, with a ton of added pressure on top. She used her words in a way that was descriptive and narrative and deep. She battles demons that other people do too. She just happens to do it in public. Girls was the most raw, realistic, and authentic show I have ever seen. It played more like an indie film broken into parts than a television series. Only HBO would have made it. Netflix is too mainstream, too concerned with broad appeal, too focused on numbers. Girls was a specific artistic vision that required a network willing to let someone make something uncomfortable and true. HBO was that. Nobody else would have been. There was so much emotion in that show. Even in the parts I could not personally relate to at all, I still felt something. That is the mark of writing that actually works. The characters were real people making real decisions in situations that were not exaggerated for effect. The story you tell is only as good as the life you are living. Those characters were living in a way that was impossible not to feel. No dramatics, hysterics, or overplaying, besides the sexual scenes. And those may be normal for some people, I couldn't tell ya. Having enjoyed all that Girls had to offer, Famesick is a deeper dive into someone's journey through their 20s, and it is such a comfort read. I finally felt some kinship with someone. Lena said a lot of things I have been thinking. I may not be able to relate to everything in her life, but I felt closer to her after reading this book, like she understood me. I constantly battle with the things she writes about. It was part of the reason it took me so long to start this site. I want to accomplish so much, but the impact that ambition has on my mental health is something I have been questioning, and questioning even more since reading this book. I am trying to find balance right now, and this memoir is very much about balancing ambitions with mental health. That balance is something nobody talks about enough, especially in the entertainment industry. The most important lesson from this memoir was not letting fame and success get in the way of taking care of yourself. Even those who get a development deal or a pilot order are scared and trying to figure it out one step at a time. It was a relief to hear about her experience and not feel so alone in feeling lost and behind. I don't see myself ever growing to a point where I need to worry about the same type of "famesick" she describes. But I am definitely responsible for chasing the entertainment industry so hard while it constantly hits me with rejection. This memoir assured me that putting my mental health first is always going to be necessary, and no success or fame will ever change that. I wish every memoir was as detailed, specific, and clear as this one. Every female should watch Girls before they reach 25, and every person who wants to work in entertainment in some way should read this memoir. There are so many lessons to be had. Reading it is not going to stop you from chasing your dreams, but it will definitely make you do a double take about how you perceive your world and how you view your future and success. Clearly Lena Dunham is a writer. No ghostwriter was needed in the making of this memoir. The way her sentences are put together, the flow of each chapter, it does not read like a memoir. It is pretty impressive to tell a story about your life in a way that pulls the reader in like a fiction novel. I do hope that after all this press, she is back to a confident space where she can pump out great material, because the world needs another story from her. As Hannah wanted to be in Girls, I do believe Lena Dunham is the voice of a generation. This memoir is a critical piece of literature that I will recommend to anyone who reads. His brain works unlike any other, and I could listen to him talk for hours. So when I heard he wrote, directed, and starred in his own independent film, I was not surprised. I was just excited. Wingman is a classic independent comedy. It reads like an indie film, but the comedy is absolutely competitive with box office releases. For anyone who feels like comedies are not getting made anymore, this will prove you wrong. The fact that it landed on both Apple TV and Prime Video is impressive for an independent project. If Harland can do it, so many others can too. This feels like the start of something, more comics backing themselves to create film and TV without waiting around for a distribution deal. That is the definition of betting on yourself. Wingman follows a guy whose entire job is helping other men get laid, but underneath that premise is a deeper conflict about what the word "wingman" actually means and what real connection looks like. The movie could have had a box office feel, but there were choices made that go against that grain. Because Harland was the writer, editor, and director, I think it was genuinely difficult for him to decide what to cut. I usually do not feel like there is anything missing from a movie, but that was not the case here. Certain scenes felt forced, like they existed just to get more use out of a specific set. The car scenes were hilarious, but the most obviously low-budget. You could tell. It feels like some creative decisions had to be compromised for money reasons, which would not be the case in a big-budget production. That is not a criticism so much as an observation about what independent filmmaking actually looks like up close. What worked in Harland's favor was the cast. Largely no-names who fit their roles really well. Russell Peters as Kazzim is the second lead and holds his own. Jamie Kennedy shows up and is great, but I wanted more of him. For a movie without people I already knew, I found myself rooting for the characters quickly. It often felt like this could have been two or three movies in one; there was that much going on. But it was inspirational. It made me feel like anyone with a vision and enough drive can make something real. What a lot of young people may not realize is how long Harland has been doing this. His film debut was the pee-drinking cop in Dumb and Dumber in 1994\. He played the hitchhiking serial killer in There's Something About Mary, Kenny the stoner in Half Baked, and the lead in RocketMan. My guy has range, and anyone who listens to one episode of his podcast knows this is how he is all the time. Always on. I am forever intrigued. I am seeing him in a few days at [The Carlson,](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/the-carlson/) and it will no doubt be a packed, exhilarating show. I am so grateful to get to experience my guy's chaos firsthand. ### Adam Ray Is Finally Getting the Streaming Recognition He Deserves URL: https://www.layeredentertainment.com/adam-ray-netflix-show/ Last updated: 2026-06-16T10:55:39.000Z Adam Ray has become one of my favorite stand-up comics touring right now. He is full of surprises, characters, and hilarious lines, and I cannot wait to see what comes next. Adam Ray has had a long, quiet career in Hollywood for over 20 years. He earned roles in Curb Your Enthusiasm, had a cameo in the Barbie movie, and has taken on roles in Hacks, Pam and Tommy, and other projects along the way. The credits were always there. The spotlight was not. His new Netflix video podcast, The Adam Ray Show, debuts June 19 with new episodes dropping every Friday, and I am FIRED. UP. He taps into his full roster of characters to interview famous guests — Dr. Phil, his Hollywood mentalist Bruce Robbins, Jeremy, and many, many more, and according to Netflix, no one is safe. First up are Michael Bublé, Dave Matthews, Nikki Glaser, and Andrew Santino, with Hasan Minhaj, Jelly Roll, Mark Normand, and others to follow. I am curious to see how the show compares to what he already produces on YouTube. The production quality he brings to his live shows is impressive, and this feels like a natural continuation of that, just on a much bigger stage. He did not need Netflix. But I understand the appeal. His Dr. Phil act made it to Netflix, a world tour, Killy Tony, and countless YouTube videos. The recognition was always coming. I am just surprised it took this long. The weekly drop format is not very common for top titles right now, so it will be interesting to see if momentum builds as the season progresses. I think it will. After nearly twenty years in stand-up, Adam Ray found his niche — and people are realizing quickly just how many things he can do well. This feels like the beginning of a much bigger chapter. ### Summer House Will Never Be the Same URL: https://www.layeredentertainment.com/summer-house-will-never-be-the-same/ Last updated: 2026-06-16T10:27:41.000Z The West and Amanda situation has been one of the most talked-about things in Bravo fandom. And a huge reason for that is the editing. A couple of years back, Heather Gay said it best at the Real Housewives of Salt Lake City Season 4 finale. Standing in Bermuda after the truth about Monica Garcia came out, she looked across the table and delivered what is now one of the most iconic lines in Bravo history: *"*Receipts, proof, timeline, screenshots, fing everything"\* (Variety, January 2024.) The Bravo editors made sure every single one of those things was on screen. That is the standard. And this Summer House season proved they have not slipped. They had ALL of it. By the end of part one, it was clear that Amanda and West had been lying to people for a very long time. The extended and uncut version was not optional; it was necessary. There was too much going on for a regular cut to do it justice. Ciara came out swinging. More aggressive than I expected, honestly. But after dealing with that situation? I would probably act the same way. I cannot imagine one of my best friends getting with my ex. That is insane. And as a regular viewer, the anger hits differently because Summer House will NEVER be the same after this. The editors did not have to show us what they showed us. They had footage of West and Amanda together all summer and were deliberate about using it, getting the right shots, making sure the audience understood there was more to the story than what was being admitted to. Yes, you can make anything appear true if you film the right things. But this was more than that. Amanda was treating Kyle terribly all season and acting like she and West were already together. She dragged that situation out for months, made it seem like things would eventually be okay, and meanwhile, the editors were quietly building the case. I do not fully believe she and West were together while she was still with Kyle. But she was definitely ready to be done. She was flirty. She had already made a decision and just had not said it out loud yet. Kyle is doing a good job of laying low. Being supportive. And it is hard to argue he is not getting a sympathetic edit, because he is. He deserves it. Then came part two of the reunion and In The City, and the editors pulled off something I have genuinely never seen before in reality television. First, I watched Amanda get absolutely obliterated at the reunion. Then, almost immediately, I saw her on In The City, composed, talking directly to the camera, telling her side of the story. The contrast was jarring in the best possible way. And the editors made sure you FELT it, using a cracked green-screen effect and shifting the entire background from fall tones to something clearly filmed less than a month before air date. That kind of turnaround is almost unheard of in reality TV production. The fact that they pulled it off and made it look intentional and seamless is genuinely impressive. I am not the only one who noticed. Other blogs and fan accounts were specifically calling out the Bravo editors for giving us the most complete version of this story they possibly could. They made me want to be an editor, and I do not say that about anything. Cannot wait for the final part of the reunion and to see what happens next on In The City. The bigger question is what happens to Summer House now. Kyle, Amanda, and Lindsay ARE that show. Without them, it does not exist in the same way. Bravo knew what they were doing when they greenlit In The City. This feels like a natural shift, a transfer of energy from one show to another while the original figures out what it even is anymore. Whether Summer House survives this or not, the crossover to In The City has been seamless, dramatic, and exactly what the Bravo editors live for. The Bravo editors found their way into the spotlight this season, and I am so happy that fans are finally giving them the flowers they deserve. ### The Carlson URL: https://www.layeredentertainment.com/the-carlson/ Last updated: 2026-06-18T20:14:25.000Z I have been following comedy in the form of TV and memoirs for quite a few years now, but my love of stand-up is recent and really only started a little over a year ago. I started this obsession slowly, wading into the waters with an SNL favorite of mine, Tracy Morgan. This put me on a path I was not expecting. I ended up getting tickets to Jessie Johnson a month later at The Carlson, and the rest is history. I used to feel so stuck where I am living. It can often feel like there is nothing to do around here, and all the excitement is being had in the bigger cities everyone has heard of. But Rochester is making a name for itself, and I am convinced it is on the rise in the comedy scene. There is so much comedy happening in and around Rochester nowadays, and the peak experience is a night at The Carlson. I can't believe I went so many years not knowing this place existed. It is now the place I look forward to going the most. I make sure to visit regularly, and I am never disappointed. There are so many great comics touring right now, and the owner of The Carlson has his finger on the pulse. If we enjoy a set on Kill Tony this week, they are getting booked at The Carlson the next. That is impressive for a town many have heard of and refuse to visit. Granted, there have been numerous shows scheduled and cancelled by the talent, like they are Dave Chappelle, but that happens at every venue and is par for the course in stand-up. I have been able to see some people I would have never expected to see in person in my life. And it was amazing. If I know the comic, you can find me front row, smiling ear to ear, from start to finish of the show. I wish more people knew about stand-up and made it a regular part of their routine. It is such a great way to spend time, drinking or not, you can enjoy yourself. They have yet to book anyone who puts on a bad show, and that consistency is everything. I don't see myself moving for a few years, so I would really love to make The Carlson more of my spot, my go-to. I want to be spending all my free time there, learning about new comics, watching improv, seeing touring comics, all of it. I have high hopes that Rochester can become a better, smaller, more convenient version of Buffalo that people don't mind coming to. I think The Carlson has a lot of potential, particularly in its social media and engagement. They could be regularly communicating with comics online and getting people excited, and I don't doubt that it will eventually come. Every show I go to, I am shocked that there are so many empty seats down in front, the first thing a comic sees when they walk out. People like Kam Patterson have called it out first thing. Fill those seats. The Carlson consistently books the best touring comics still doing club venues, names you already know and names you are about to know. Tickets are affordable, and it is one of the only clubs in the country without a two-drink minimum. You do not need two drinks to laugh your ass off at the likes of Kevin Nealon, Aries Spears, Andrew Dismukes, Jim Norton, William Montgomery, the list goes on. [Harland Williams ](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/harland-williams-bet-on-himself-and-won/)is up next month, and I already have tickets to Big Jay and [Pauly Shore](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/netflix-is-a-joke-fest/). The lineup is stacked. If you are not making live stand-up a regular part of your life, you are leaving one of the easiest mood boosts available to you on the table. The Carlson is proof of that. Do not be the last one to catch on. ### Netflix is a Joke Fest: The Week That Started This Blog URL: https://www.layeredentertainment.com/netflix-is-a-joke-fest/ Last updated: 2026-06-18T20:21:22.000Z **Netflix is a Joke Fest: The Week That Started All of This** Almost a month ago, I spent the best week of my life surrounded by comedy in Los Angeles. Four shows, an endless number of comics, and more people I recognized from my screen than I knew what to do with. I have been obsessed with comedy in every form for years. Stand-up, sitcoms, podcasts, memoirs, all of it. But there is something about being in the room that no amount of screen time can replicate. Netflix is a Joke Fest reminded me of that in a way I was not prepared for. They say laughter is the best medicine. I am a testament to that. Comedy has given me more than entertainment. It has given me a way to process things, connect with people, and find something worth looking forward to. This week had all of that in abundance, and by the end of it, [I had run out of reasons not to start this site](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/about/). Here is how the week went. --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/06/IMG_2843.jpeg) Hollywood Bowl, May 2026 **Shane Gillis and a Few Friends — Hollywood Bowl** I started the week at the Hollywood Bowl for Shane Gillis and Friends. Let me be clear: it was great, I do not regret going, and the Hollywood Bowl is an incredible venue without a bad seat in the house. Now, let me also be honest, I expected more. Six comics for a show called "and Friends" felt light. There are shows at this festival with ten to fifteen people on the roster. This one had Shane, James McCann, Sam Jay, Ron White, Dan Soder, and Jim Jeffries. I was 0 for 5 on predicting who the Friends would be, which, in hindsight, made it more interesting. Dan Soder was the highlight and did not disappoint. Ron White showing up was unexpected in the best way. The show also started thirty minutes late, which likely limited how many surprise guests could realistically pop in, given the venue curfew. I needed more. Underwhelming is the right word, even if I mean that in the most respectful way possible. The real experience of the night had nothing to do with what happened on stage. I was not prepared for how many people I would recognize just by walking around. The night started with [Pauly Shore ](https://www.layeredentertainment.com/the-carlson/)passing two feet from me on the sidewalk. By the time I was navigating inside, I was squeezing past faces I know well who have no idea who I am. I was shaking the first time I went to the bathroom. It got easier after that, but only slightly. --- ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/06/IMG_0980-1.jpeg) The Hollywood Improv, May 2026 **Ian Fidance ft. Blair Socci, Luke Mones, Tommy Mitchell — The Improv, The Lab** Wednesday night was at The Improv, specifically in The Lab. A small, intimate room that completely changes the experience of watching stand-up. It was my favorite venue of the week for that reason alone. The food menu did not hurt either. Best I have had at any comedy club, and I spent more money than I should have with zero regrets. By this point in the week, I had seen so many comics that they were starting to blur together. That made the ones who stood out stand out even more. Of the three openers, Blair Socci, Luke Mones, and Tommy Mitchell, Blair was the one I could not stop thinking about after. She has this high, distinctive energy that immediately reminded me of Kristen Schaal, Victoria Jackson, and Jen Tilly all at once. The kind of voice and presence that is made for animated series. Completely her own. Later in the week, I saw photos of her at the Comedy Store alongside some significantly bigger names, which told me everything I needed to know. She has a place in multiple rooms and is clearly on her way. Ian was underprepared. That was obvious. But his energy in that small room was electric enough that it did not matter as much as it should have. There is something about watching someone perform in a space that is intimate that makes you more forgiving and more connected at the same time. It also made me realize I desperately need Instagram if I want to follow who is actually coming up in this scene. I am doing myself a disservice. --- ![Netflix is a Joke logo at The Comedy Store, LA, 2026](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/06/IMG_4108-1.jpeg) The Comedy Store, May 2026 **Mystery Lineup at The Comedy Store — The Original Room** Thursday night at The Comedy Store was the best show of the week. I am beyond grateful I finally got a chance to experience what I only knew from photos and videos on social media. The Comedy Store has a no-phone policy. I did not think about my phone for four hours. The only time it crossed my mind was when I wanted to write down who I was seeing so I would not forget. But with a mystery lineup, that is exactly the point. I have since pieced together that the night included Greg Fitzsimmons, Jeff Ross, Kirk Fox, Steph Tolev, Matt Rife, and Amir K, among many others. Jon Lovitz, Pauly Shore, and Ian Edwards were watching from the back. ![Photo of Greg Fitzsimmons performing stand-up](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/06/IMG_2892.jpeg) Photo by Van Corona via The Comedy Store Facebook, May 2026 Speaking of Matt Rife, I remember seeing him more than almost anyone else that night, yet I do not remember a single joke. He had done another show earlier and had nothing left. The crowd was equally shot. More comics were hanging out in the back of the Original Room than people were watching from the seats by 1 am. I walked right past him on the way out and barely registered it. When you are in a room that just had Jeff Ross and Greg Fitzsimmons on the same stage, the bar for what counts as memorable goes up considerably. What stays with me most is how normal everyone seemed. Comics I have watched on screen for years, whose specials I have seen multiple times, hanging out in the back of a room like they were waiting for a friend. The Comedy Store does something for the people who love it. You can feel it the moment you walk in. I have not been that disconnected from the world in a long time, and I could not think of a better place to do it. --- ![Close up of stage for Bad Friends Live at The Youtube Theatre](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/06/IMG_4119.jpeg) The Hollywood Bowl, May 2026 **Bad Friends Live** Friday was Bad Friends Live, and I did not realize how good my seats were until I walked up to the third row and sat down. The openers set the tone well, Fancy, Kat Bird, Dax Flame, yes, the Project X guy and longtime fixture of the Bad Friends universe, and a comic whose name I never pinned down but who was announced as someone preparing to appear at the Kevin Hart Roast. Then Andrew Santino, then Bobby Lee. Andrew is one of those performers who does not need to raise his voice or increase his energy to make something land. Calm, controlled, letting the writing do the work. It is a style that only holds up if you are genuinely confident in the material, and he is. Bobby is the complete opposite. Explosive, dynamic, physical, all over the stage Watching them back-to-back is its own kind of lesson in how different two genuinely effective comedians can be. After the stand-up set the Bad Friends team came out together. Bobby went into the audience from the start. I think he made out with 5 different people. All I could think of was how bad this would be during COVID. They set up what became a live game show of sorts, an hour of interactive chaos built to promote the Bad Friends Game Show dropping on YouTube. It was loud and completely entertaining and exactly what you would expect from that group. The only way the night could have been better is if I had been watching from backstage. I even got a chance to watch a trailer for their new show coming out in August, so I am even more excited for that. --- ![Photo of Amir K performing at The Comedy Store, LA](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/06/IMG_2890.jpeg) Photo by Van Corona via The Comedy Store Facebook, May 2026 **Why This Week Exists on This Site** I have been talking about starting something like this for longer than I want to admit. After a week of four shows, too many comics to count, and more laughs than I have had in a long time, I finally ran out of excuses. I am not a comedian, and I am not trying to be. But comedy has shaped more of my life than almost anything else I could name, and I want to be closer to it in whatever way I can. This site is that. A way to be part of something I love deeply without being the one on stage. Paying attention, taking it seriously, and hopefully convincing a few other people to do the same. Netflix is a Joke Fest did what great comedy always does. It reminded me of what I actually care about. ![Jon Lovitz and Jeff Ross](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ab/e4/abe46c16-d00d-48eb-a4c3-4d0258671c94/content/images/2026/06/IMG_2896-1.jpeg) Photo by Van Corona via The Comedy Store Facebook, May 2026
